Princess Chulabhorn invites donations to support poor patients at Siriraj Hospital

BANGKOK, 22 September 2012 (NNT) – Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn has urged wealthy people to donate money to the Siriraj Hospital Foundation to help it take care of a large number of sick people from deprived families.

The Princess made the call in her capacity as chairperson of the fund-raising committee for Siriraj Hospital, a medical school under Mahidol University. Siriraj organizes a major fund-raising event once a year in the week ending 24 September, which is Mahidol Day commemorating the death of HRH Prince Mahidol, the Father of Thai Modern Medicine, and also the royal grandfather.

In a recorded interview scheduled to be aired on Channel 5 on the night of 22 September 2012, HRH Princess Chulabhorn talked about her experiences while working at Siriraj. According to her, Siriraj is the biggest and oldest hospital in the country, taking care of a large number of patients both the haves and the have-nots. Many patients coming from upcountry usually pack into the hospital very early in the morning waiting for their turn of treatment, for which payment is never made.

The Princess stressed that any amount of donation will be meaningful to those patients while donors will in return receive happiness in mind, resulting in their stronger health and longer life.

Princess Chulabhorn also said she is helping a medical team at Siriraj taking care of His Majesty the King’s health. The Princess commended the doctors for their intense devotion given to the treatment which involves His Majesty's lung, stomach and brain. She said however that moral support is equally important, especially to an aged patient.

On the latest development of His Majesty the King’s conditions, Princess Chulabhorn said His Majesty was cheerful but had difficulty walking and using his arms and legs due to a neurological disease. Doctors have been very careful in giving him the medication so as to prevent subdural bleeding from recurring.

She continued to say that His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn had often come to see His Majesty while the medical team always gave him encouragement and made him happy. The Princess finally remarked that His Majesty had great concern over the plight of people affected by floods, and lamented that he was unable to visit Ratchaburi Province in July this year due to his illnesses.

Transport: Thailand to focus on rail transport development during 2013-2020 fiscal years

UBON RATCHATHANI, 22 September 2012 (NNT) – The Transport Ministry is set to continue the development of the country’s rail transport system during fiscals 2013 and 2020.

Transport Minister Charupong Ruangsuwan said on Friday that the ministry will be playing an important role in the reconstruction and future development of Thailand.

Mr. Charupong said that, in order to implement such a plan, Thailand will likely need around 2.2 trillion baht, which can be raised through domestic and overseas borrowings.

For the Transport Ministry, the construction of the rail transport system is a focus, as it can be an effective tool in lowering costs in times that oil prices continue to rise.

The Transport Ministry stated that the rail transport system will also enhance the country’s transport industry while helping it better compete with other countries within this region.

However, he conceded that land, marine and air transports are still needed to perfect the whole system.

Mr. Charupong added that the Transport Ministry is poised to further develop international transport systems with Bangkok set as the center in this region.

2,000 people made ill by floods each day

BANGKOK, 22 September 2012 (NNT) - Minister of Public Health Wittaya Buranasiri has reported that almost 2,000 people are suffering from illnesses caused by floods each day with 111 people experiencing stress.

Mr Wittaya and MD Narong Sahamethaphat, the director-general of the Department of Mental Health, accompanied by senior Public Health officials, on Saturday traveled to flood-hit Si Maha Pho district in Prachin Buri province to hand out relief supplies and first-aid kits to affected people. The minister and his entourage then visited mobile medical units which were assisting the flood-stricken residents.

According to the minister, 16 provinces have been submerged so far, and half of the number are in the central region. 30 medical mobile teams are dispatched to aid 2,000 people daily. Most of the flood victims are reported to suffer from a headache, followed by athlete’s foot and flu. 38 out of the 111 people with stress from the flooding situation have been under close care by medical staff.

The minister warned people who lived in flooded areas, especially small children, of drowning and eye infections. Swimming and walking in flood water are strongly discouraged.
