I see where you are comng from but there is endless enthusiasm for sanook shopping sex and money, fairly low in Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

There are Thais who read thats why there are bookshops, manga and comics I agree fill large sheves.

While Muay Thai Bhuddist festivals or family dinners may not be yourr thing they seem more content than many more affluent nations.Of course if you seek wit hyperbole ,intellectual rigour and are not my wife ! there is always TD and the virtual Left Bank.

You are cordially invited to sit around the wireless with a Nostalgiachino if you pass by dressed as Santa 25 Dec, Miao may eve leave milk n cookies to guide you.

Non illigitimus Carborundum

The Village Voice went free and you can access more Music than the royasl can afford at the touch of switch.Oncce voice to text ends sms and Twatter I predict illiteracy will predominate as an anachronism like me typewriters, mangles and spitoons

I have tried several times to read & comprehend, but must admit to being completely bewildered by this post...

I think it's some kind of "stream of consciousness", a la The Naked Lunch.

Is this criticism against the electronic age coming from guys who spend every waking hour in front of a computer ? smile.png

Touche Banzai99, touche....

..but at least I can sit around naked by myself while surfing the net, without fear of offending others....they always get somewhat cross if I do the same in a public restaurant. Never could figure out why.

What a ridiculous statement. You have no idea how old the OP is, or for that matter anyone else who agrees with him.

It all depends in the situatition. Some light / mild use is ok. But ignoring every one during social meetings will tick off young and old.

I like iPad and smartphones but when your with others it's polite to consider their feelings too.

I had quite the experience a couple of weeks ago.I was having coffee in my usual coffee shop and at a table near me a woman was doing something with what I think is am iPad. I had to walk behind her to get something I noticed I was being displayed on her large screen. I waved my hands in front of me trying to let her know I didnot want her to video me or show me online. She got angry at me because she thought I was trying to get into her picture rather than out. She was in her opinion HI So because she could sit in a cafe with her iPad and took offence I simply ignored her and she finally left. That really gets under my skin. If I wanted the world to see me I would do it myself not have it done by someone I never met before or donot even know. I considered it an invasion of privacy.

I like the op see it as rather odd not normal the usage of these devices every where. I feel it is only normal to those with a real life.

Really? Do you have such a high opinion of yourself that if you are in the background of a video that people will be clamouring to see you? If you went to a temple and was caught in the background of someone photo, would you ask them to delete it?

Nobody cares! You didn't even register in any ones vision until you waved your arms in the air.

Personally I think it is a shame to see a family at dinner all doing their own thing, but its their choice and I'm not going to care enough to let it hinder my enjoyment. Live and let live.

I agree, I'll text the wife to see if she agrees. :)

It's an Asian thing, not specifically Thai and not specifically related to iPhone/iPad.

One of the things I found very weird when I arrived in Asia (no mobile phone at that time) was people reading newspapers and magazines in restaurant. There you have a couple eating together, the wife reading a fashion magazine, the husband reading the sport pages, and not talking to each other. I was thinking what the point to go to restaurant with someone if you don't talk to each other.

Then later I realized that eating out was much more common in Asia than in Europe. Some people I know almost never eat home. It's not a special occasion, actually it is very similar to a lot of family meals in the west when people are watching TV during dinner, don't talk to each other and leave the table as soon as they finish the dessert.

I believe the main difference is for westerners eating out is a "special" occasion, while for Asian it's a non event.

Slightly tangental to the subject; I found it quite an amusing scene at the Singapore F1 to see so many in the stands holding up their Ipads to video the cars going by. Don't people buy camera's any more?

Not if they are effectively already carrying a perfectly good one.

There is a Nokia phone with a 41MP camera built in, the Pureview 808.

Welcome to RJ's world . . . incomprehensible yet you get used to him after a few years. Witty, if you can decypher it

there is a time to use it and a time when not to use it.

Bingo . . .

Of course, its not a good thing to start using it when others want to be social. But i can be just as unsocial with a book as with an ipad. Though now i read 90% of my books on the ipad.

I agreed with you completely . . . the thing about books, however, is that one doesn't usually bring books to dinner . . . smart phones and tabs are really a scourge in that respect, though

Maybe ironic that so many people are addicted to these facebook type of social network sites that they are losing the ability for social networking face to face.

Pathetic!

Proverbial nail on the head Loong! It is not so much that the technology is available but what it is being used for. I strongly believe that social networking is adictive!

As an aside but relating to the OP, I find it ironic that an anagram of Facebook is 'book cafe'

Here's something I did in the US with friends.

We stacked our phones, ipods, whatever off to the side. The first person to pick theirs up, pays the bill.

Good idea.

I thought I was the only one that suffered this behaviour. I admit to being annoyed, but there is not much I can do about it. I have said, umm don't you think this is slightly rude, and received a blank stare. Nothing I can do about it, so I don't worry about it anymore and often bring a newspaper or magazine and start to read. When I do that, I am told I am being rude. blink.png

Quality is good enough to not need a camera these days

I am waiting for the day the sun puts out a huge solar flare and fries all of this electronic media.

It will take months if not years to get everything up and running again. Welcome to the dark age.

A friend of mine owned a bar back in UK and he ran an electronic loop around the inside of the bar, blocking reception for mobiles. The locals thought it was great.

The police however had different views. They told him that he had to remove it immediately otherwise they would and then lock him up. Their reasoning was twofold:

1. It could cause malfunction of a medical device such as a pacemaker.

2. It could inadvertantly detonate a bomb prematurely if being placed on the premises and it was on a remote trigger.

The first one he hadn't thought about and he removed his loop because of that. The second point he still thinks they were taking the p1ss.

About the same weight as using a mobile on an aircraft.
