Seems like you are trying to treat a specific condition right? I can't really advise on that. As a general skin/fur tonic (works well) I give my dogs one Mega-3 1000MG softgel fish oil cap daily with food. Brand is Nutri Master, available at Watsons.

i'm not a vet but it seems your dog is suffering from "atopic dermatitis". i have been told that happens with pure/overbred dogs. one of my darlings has that condition which requires continous and rather expensive medication. it is a small dog (weight 10kg) the medication "Cyclosporine" is not available in Thailand except in a too high dosis of 100mg. we therefore import 25mg capsules and were successful in bringing the medication down to an average of 17mg (two days medication, one day off). unfortunately the medication is a liquid in a capsule and can therefore not be "divided".

both dogs get of course their daily ration of fish oil but only 50mg as per the vet's prescription for 10kg weight. i buy the 1000mg capsules, drain them, mix the fish oil with olive oil and add the appropriate amount in their daily food.

One more thing you can try that I find very effective for some skin problems is a natural organic brand of apple cider vinegar. DON'T use Heinz. Get Braggs or the Australian equivalent Healthy Mate, both available in Thai stores. Put it in a spray bottle and spray liberally onto the skin/coat and allow to dry naturally. If there are open sores, dilute the vinegar 50/50 with water as it will sting. Apply twice a day until it clears up. As with all remedies, natural or on prescription, if you see any adverse reaction, stop.

By the way, fish oil supplementation is very safe for pets and the 50 MG recommended by Naam's vet seems ridiculously low. Here's what Dr Weil has to say on this subject:

"You can get fish oil supplements designed for companion animals from both Nordic Naturals and Animal Essentials (and, I'm sure, from other sources), but you also can use fish oil meant for humans as long as you choose the correct dosage. For example, Nordic Naturals recommends one capsule of its 1500 mg soft gel fish oil for large dogs weighing 20 pounds or more. Smaller animals should get smaller doses. If you use fish oil that is intended for humans, you can give larger dogs a capsule or two (depending on the dosage) and puncture a capsule to squeeze some of the contents into the food of smaller dogs or cats."

I might add that the above are maintenance doses, and you might try upping the dose to aid recovery of an existing condition.

wf got nutri master 1000mg.from watsons who have a deal at the moment,230capsuls=640bht. got the vet to come and check him over gave him 3injections and 2weeks tabs.as we take precautions against ticks and fleas he advised us to stop useing the shampoo as its too strong for him[bearings] come to think about it when we changed shampoo's then he started to get these hot spots.

i don't deny that 50mg only might be ridiculous but it does the job. the coat of both dogs are in perfect condition.

i forgot to mention that fish in various forms as well as other kind of seafood is a part of their diet. we don't feed the crap which is sold as "dog food" except using some pellets as treats.

That's great Naam. Didn't mean to be offensive! Yes, they look in great condition. My dogs reguarly eat fresh fish straight out of the garden pond too.

When feeding raw fresh-water fish I hope you are aware of the worms and parasites that are found both within the flesh and in particular the liver.

Sea water fish are a better option for raw feeding, those living near the sea would be wise to feed raw mackerel sold off cheap from Tescop fish counter at the end of the day.

If a dog does not want to eat I would look for a problem in the mouth or something inside like liver/stomach problems.

If a dog is ill fasting for 24 hours is normal, after two days seek a cause.

A dog is most driven by the sense of smell not taste (but they do have/use taste buds) - better

to make the food more interesting by breaking/pouring the fish oil capsule over it. Better still feed BARF.

Best stimulation for a healthy appetite is regular long walks.
