Does Your Smartphone Driving Directions App Work In Los?

It's been almost a year since I was in LOS and I've since bought a Motorola Galaxy (Android) phone. As most probably know, it has an awesome google app where I can find a list of restaurants by type, or any of many other things, choose one, and then it goes into driving direction mode. The directions are both on the screen and verbal. It knows where I am via GPS, and tells me to drive a certain distance to a certain street and then turn a certain direction on that street. As I make that turn, the screen changes to show me the next segment of my route, and there is a new verbal command telling me where to go next, where to turn and in what direction. It keeps doing that until I arrive at my destination. Cool. smile.png

I'm curious to know if the data is there for the major cities (at least) in LOS? I'll be back in LOS in a couple of months, and moving there next year.

Anyone, please?

Edit: Also for anyone using one, what is a normal monthly charge in LOS for using these phones?

Wow, now that you have pointed out the OP's error and shown your self to be so smart, you could have at least answered whether the Google Maps App has turn by turn directions and what's close to me info for Thailand. I guess if you have nothing useful to contribute, pointing out someone else's errors is the only way you can feel good about yourself.

OP

I have never used Google Maps in Thailand but I believe it works for turn by turn directions. I have used it to get directions for two points in rural Thailand and it worked fine but since I wasn't there driving the directions I can't be sure that the turn by turn announcements work, although I don't see why they wouldn't.

CharlieH, I've been wanting to find something as well, what device are you using it on ? I see it's SE ASIA on Itunes which is a major bonus for me.

I have the Galaxy Note from Samsung. I used to use a Garmin, but this knocks spots off that. Sygic is accurate and has speed warnings and easy locate on many different places of interest and others like Banks etc. really good app. It isnt free but its only 20 Euro's which is well worth it in my opinion. If you change devices you can also transfer to new device so you dotn lose anything. All the other countries are available to download too as and when you need them.

You can free trial it for 14 days I think may be 30 not sure.

I have the Galaxy S1, the Google Maps app that is on the phone works wherever you are in Thailand that has network coverage, big cities and small villages.

While the Google Maps app may work, does it give turn-by-turn directions as you are diving? It did not use to.

The issue I have with Google Maps is that it requires a data connection. Does the SIGIC app require data connection while in use? Or does it download all the information it needs and can be used without a connection?

Due to the crappy mobile data speeds in Thailand, you need an app which does not need permanent internet connection on the road.

Oops, sorry, yes it's a Samsung. My prior was a Motorola.

The app works off satellite gps and I don't know if all of the data is stored in the phone or if it gets it via internet as needed. It would be a lot of data I'd think if it's stored. It's great because it always knows where I am via gps and I just choose where I want to go. It is wonderful in a strange city and certainly would be in a strange country but it's even wonderful in my town. If I see something on Craigslist I want to go look at, the person gives me an address and it takes me there.

If anyone is actually doing this in LOS I'd sure like to know it.

It does give turn by turn directions, but it can be slow depending on the number of apps running and the download speed, I usually give it to my wife to look at and tell me where to go (something she's good at), only problem is the screen keeps going idle which can be a major inconvenience when you look at the map and see a dark screen.

Google Maps works in the cities, but once you get outside of the cities it can send you to the wrong place. Happened to me trying to track down a Hua Hin Hotel. Ended up in Cha Am beach. Not a big deal, but the lesson I learned was that you can't trust it blindly.

A couple problems I've encountered with using such maps. It's difficult to find some places for two reasons:

1) If you search in English for a certain named spot, that spot may be known in thai language only. Not so much a problem with most 'western oriented' business. Also, since English words are really an approximate english phonetic spelling of Thai word, there may be a number of English spellings for a place, and the spelling you are using isn't necessarily the one Google maps is using.

2) If you search by address, well, good luck with that. I've had plenty of addresses - as provided by business owner - come up as 'unknown address' on a google map, or designated with a drop pin in a wrong location.

Other than that - turn by turn navigation goes with the traffic - just part of the adventure.
