BOGOTA, COLOMBIA (BNO NEWS) -- A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Colombia on late Sunday morning, seismologists and witnesses said. No tsunami warnings were issued and there was no immediate word on possible damage or casualties.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake at 11:31 a.m. local time (1631 GMT) was centered about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Popayán, the capital of the Colombian department of Cauca. It struck about 140 kilometers (87 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
