Why Don't You Have A Thai Favorite Team?

Seeing how many here, who still follow their favorite teams from "back home" even after many years in Thailand, makes me wonder, why expats here don't follow TPL? Maybe the standard is not up to, what we are spoiled with from television, but that is not the question. Good way the "meet the locals" and enjoy the whole atmosphere around the matches, and 100% sure appriciated by the local fans. Where I live, we don't have a footballteam, but a racetrack with supercar and moto-GP races and I have been going there every 2 weeks for more than a year now, and have met a lot of Thai people, who have realized that farangs are not so strange after all. Must be the same if you "adopt" a Thai team and go to their homegames. Gives you a good time, and you will find out, that sportfans, no matter what nationality, have a lot in common. So if you live anywhere near, where local football is being played, go to their matches!thumbsup.gif

I've been supporting and watching Chonburi since 2002. It's been great to see the club grow so much in the last ten years. And I feel really proud to have been a part of it.

Maybe the standard in the TPL isn't as high as most of us are used to (even as a lifelong Oldham fan!) but going to the match is about much more than the football. I'd recommend it to anyone.

On the pitch the club has given me many highlights: Pro League champions in 2005; Singapore Cup runners up in 2006; TPL champions in 2007 (first provincial team to do so and the catalyst for the boom over the past couple of years); FA Cup winners in 2010 and now we're in the semi finals of the AFC Cup. Quite remarkable when you consider the first match I went to had about 50 people in attendance and the vast majority of people in Chonburi didn't even know the club existed.

Off the pitch I've made many friends who I also socialise with away from football. I wouldn't change it for the world.

Why Don't I have a favorite Thai team.

Because they suck at: Hockey, Baseball, Curling, Canadian Football, Lacrosse, F1, and rodeo.

And those are the sports I grew up with.

I try to like soccer style football, but I just can't get my teeth into it.

Some of us do. There's quite a few of us that are season ticket holders at Chonburi, and we go to most of the away games as well. The football, even for the better teams, might only be as good as the lower reaches of the football league but we enjoy ourselves anyway. It's not just about the football, it's a good day out with some friends as well.

Our season ticket was about 4500 baht and for that we got all the home league games, the home AFC cup league games plus a free replica shirt and all home programs thrown in as well. At ninety quid for a complete season I think that's pretty good value, regardless of the quality of the football.

With the constant drums, singing and chanting the atmosphere is really good and friendly as well. Even the away supporters bring their drums etc, but I think the Away Supporters of the year must go to TOT. Not content with drums, they brought a whole brass band with them, and they entertained us throughout the entire match a couple of weeks ago. It's just a pity that with such enthusiastic supporters their team is so poorbiggrin.png.

Ive been following Muang thong utd and thai footie for the last season, going 2 MT home and some away games, and when they are out of bangkok ive gone to plenty of other games, such as tot bangkok glass, thai port, there are always plenty of games on around bangkok and it's been great, , although it cant compete with the prem/euro leagues in terms of quality footbit's thai football is v v fan friendly, reasonably priced and the clubs are v accessible and seem to genuinely care about their fans interaction, look at the clubs programmes, 0ften several pages of just pictures of fans, and i love the way ALL teams take 10 mins out at the end of EVERY game, stand in a line 2 applaud the fans

MT's football is on a par with lower end championship, though some players ive seen could possibly with a 'strong wind' could compete at a higher level. The atmosphere at mt's home game's is AMAZING and truly worth experiencing, I was genuinely amazed that thia's are so vocal when it comes to supporting their team. Ive made some great friends there both thai and Europeans, totally agree with the original post it's a great way of meeting people.

We've got a new stadium in Samui, maybe one day we'll have a team in a league. I'd definitely enjoy going down there getting on the lash and cheering them on. drunk.gif

I always enjoyed watching local league matches at home, it's great being part of club at any level

When I went to see Chelsea v Thailand xi, one of the players looked really good. He was tiny but stocky, very dark skinned and I don't think he was Thai. I tried looking him up on the internet after the match and I think he played for Buriram. A right little dynamo he was.
