PHUKET: -- The Environmental Conservation Unit of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) Phuket office will conduct more slow loris raids on Soi Bangla in Patong following the discovery of tourist touts still operating on the popular nightlife strip.

The raids to come follow a similar nighttime raid on October 4 that netted five touts who were charging tourists to have their photos taken with a slow loris, a protected species.

“I will lead our officers in a raid, arresting those who are using slow lorises as part of their trade, as soon as I hear back from the Provincial Office,” Awat Nitikul, chief of the Environmental Conservation Unit based at Phuket’s Khao Phra Thaew wildlife sanctuary, confirmed to the Phuket Gazette today.

The DNP receives daily complaints from tourists about slow lorises being seen in Patong, Chief Awat said.

Already, 10 rescued slow lorises have been relocated to the Phang Nga Wildlife Nursery Station, he said.

“The officers at the nursery will take care of the older ones for the rest of their [the slow lorises] lives, while the little ones will be released into the wild when they are big enough to survive,” he added.

Patong Police have been told to take legal action against anyone on Soi Bangla who is in the illegal possession of a slow loris, Patong Police Superintendent Chiraphat Pochanaphan told the Gazette.

Why can't they raid, instead of playing the 'for the image, we tell everyone first, what we going to do'- card, first? (Like with the 'last' black taxis, too)

'Repair' (adjust) the CCTV cam opposite Eric's Soi, so that you can see, whats going on, on that stretch of Bangla!

Send some people via Soi Gonzo into the Crocodil area.

Place some people both ends of the bangla, don't forget the third end, the 'shortcut to the beach'- road (Soi Sea Dragon?)

Don't talk about, DO THE JOB!

And because of the prove, that their wrongdoing is ongoing, can't they ban the guys, from entering Patong/Phuket?

Would make it easier, even in case, they only get caught without animals.

Or would that need, that the complaining of the stupid tourists would taken seriously?

Where they 'find' the 'unlimited' amount of lorises? Do they 'microchip' the rescued slow lorises?

They have made the press and now they will negotiate the price. Phuket like a lot of other areas is just a matter of negotiation, payoff and the problem will just dissolve.

i've just about had enough of hearing about this.

it was happening last time i was here. then i left patong for about 6 months and read twice in the news that this problem was fixed. they even posted a number in the phuketwan article to call if you see these people operating... 0866897040

so i get back to patong a week ago and bangla is full of people with loris'. i messaged the number as i couldn't be bothered to talk. nothing happened of course.

theres police at either end of bangla and at the first sign of trouble they seem to arrive very quickly on the scene. so its as easy as walking 50 metres from your police box and arresting them.

either do something or stop announcing to the media about how much you are doing and acheiving.

Ridiculous, everyone hide their slow loris for a month or two while this blows over! In the meantime, bring out your drugged up iguanas and snakes. The bastards give them ketamine so they don't lose their tempers from being thrown all over sweaty, drunk, white meat night in, night out, from 8pm to 3am.

At about 1130 today, a fat man with a slow loris was hanging out in a crappy bar near the new Tiger.

Question is, who moved slower?

They are out every night, why not just arrest them on sight, do you really need to plan a raid.

Yes because the local police are paid to ignore them, and the DNP is located up the north end of the island. The loris and gibbon people employ a number of lookouts.

With no scheduled plan, they could catch 'em, by accident!

Hey, sorry about that, my Loris had a hangover but I was craving for a beer. :(

The other issue is these animals have to be cared for once seized because the mothers are killed, and that requires a budget or space at a facility which must be sorted before hand.

^ I am puzzled by the number of childish comments in these loris and gibbon threads. Does "loris" mean something in britspeak that I am not aware, or are the readers of this thread just more immature than usual?

They are spreading. Now they are on Kata beach during the day. I noticed the Aussie Bar is running ads warning guests to not have photos taken with them. Good on them.

Here is a pic from Bangla road the other day. The poor little guy was so stressed he was squeezing his arms around his head.

I'm not sure, about stress is the reason, for squeezing his arms around his head.

They are stressed, for sure.

But can it be, that, it's trained? I've seen it many times. And it's makes them look more cute, don't you think?

Looks to me, they have (to learn) a couple of 'moves', to attract people.

That's another point, why I think, either the touts have a unlimited support for lorises, or there is a kind of foul play, with all the 'rescued' animals.

No, this is a documented defensive reaction. "They bend their heads downwards between uplifted forelegs" as they actually have brachial venom glands they use as defense. http://primatology.n...eally-venomous/

Another sad thing about it is besides killing the parents to capture the babies, they remove their teeth so they can't bite.

A friend of mine is involved in the Gibbon Project (www.gibbonproject.org) and I can assure you that there isn't foul play with the animals rescued. In fact a rescued family was just released today. Story is in the online news source which cannot be named here.

If you see gibbons or lorises being used by touts, besides calling K.Arawat you can email photos of the touts and description of the location, time and date here http://[email protected] or report it here http://www.dnp.go.th...plain/index.asp. It's mostly in Thai but the 6th option in the subject dropdown box is "Wildlife Possession" and the 7th is "Wildlife trade". I would think either would be appropriate. You can also PM them to me. I forward on all the comments I read here.
