I am confused about the reality of my tourist visa and if I can do a 'visa run.' I am a Canadian citizen and am here in Thailand on my first, three month tourist visa. I was told by a couple people that it is no longer possible to have the visa renewed simply by leaving the country on a visa run, but then I heard the opposite, and that it is possible. I haven't been able to figure this out by reading up online, or on these forums. Could someone clarify for me?

You cannot renew your single-entry tourist visa. When you used it to enter Thailand and got a 60-day permission to stay, the visa lost its validity. You can, however, apply at an immigration office for a 30-day extension of stay. The application for this extension must be made before your current permission to stay expires.

If your travel plans require it, you can then go to a Thai consulate and apply for a new tourist visa valid for one or two entries, depending on your itinerary.

If you have a three month tourist visa, that's how long the visa is valid and it should have a "must enter by" date printed on it. That's the expiration date of the visa. There should also be "number of entries" printed on the visa, either 1, 2, or 3. That controls how many times that you can enter Thailand during the period that the visa is valid. If it says 1 then you have used that entry already when you initally entered Thailand. If it's 2 or 3, then the other entries must be used before (or on) the "must enter by" date printed on the visa. Each enrty will give you 60 days permission to stay and each entry can be extended at immigration in Thailand for 30 days - cost 1900 baht.

Given that a 90 day validity is stamped on the visa it is most likely a single entry tourist visa that has to be used within 90 days of issue. It also only gives you a 60 day stay in Thailand, and as mentioned above, can be extended it for 30 more days at immigration for bt1900 before it expires.

When it all expires, or before, you can do a "visa run" into another country, and visit a Thai embassy, or consulate to apply for another 1, or 2 tourist visas, dependent on which country you go to. Not all Thai embassies, or consulates outside of Thailand operate under the same rules in the number of tourist visas they issue. The Thai embassy in Vientaine, Laos will issue 2 at once, where as the consulate in Singapore, or in Phnom Phen, Cambodia will only issue one, and in Phnom Phen they will restrict you from returning there to get another one.

You can also simply cross a border, and return to Thailand, and get a free visa exempt stamp, valid for 30 days if you fly back into Thailand, or valid for 15 days if you enter Thailand overland. So, yes, you can do "visas runs".

Thanks for your help everyone! I checked my visa and it says, "Good for one journey to Thailand. This visa must be utilized before December 9, 2012."

I arrived here September 18 so after I go in for the 30 day extension I will have to do the visa run before December 18.

My only question is regarding "If your travel plans require it..." Could you tell me what 'require it' refers to? Do I need some kind of proof, or can I just have a compelling reason to want to stay...?

Call immigration, they will tell you what to do, or better still, go there and ask. I have always found them helpful, and there is no point in staying on illegally.

The validity date means that you must use the visa (enter Thailand) before december 9th, wich you did. Upon entry you got a permission to stay for 60 days, about a week before the 60 days are finished you can visit n immigration office with 1,900 baht and a pas photo to get a 30 day extension.

Since you have a single entry, you will not get a new 60 days whne leaving and re-entering before the 9th of december.

You can however ,ake a visa exempt entry, after the extension is finished (otherwise you would lose the days from the extensions). That would give you 15 days if you re-enter Thailand by land and 30 if you re-enter Thailand by air.

Simply means if you need longer then the 90 days you can get out of your curent tourist visa. If the 15 days visa exempt entry is not enough you can go to Laos and apply there at one of the Thai consulates for a single or double entry tourist visa. No proof of your travel plans is required.

Thank you! OK, this leaves one question. If I go to Laos and apply for a single or double entry tourist visa, is it standard that people are granted a new tourist visa? If my situation is not outstanding in any way, will I get the visa?
