webfact Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Chiang Mai designates cold spell as provincial priority By Digital Media CHIANG MAI, Nov 1 -- Chiang Mai Governor Thanin Supasan has announced the coming annual cold spell and atmospheric haze as priorities of concern on the provincial agenda, particularly the flying paper lanterns released during the Loy Krathong festival later this month. Mr Thanin made the announcement today at a meeting of government, private sector and community groups. He said all the problems would be rectified by next year. The cold spell, haze, forest fires and drought were major concern that the province would tackle with the cooperation from private and civic sectors. The governor said 500,000 pieces of cold weather clothing is needed in Fang and Chom Thong districts. Mr Thanin said the hot-air lanterns that are released into the air are a serious safety problem during Loy Krathong festival every year. He said that the lanterns may cause fires if they fell onto structures. Members of the public should not release lanterns during the flight time for airlines, something that Chiang Mai International Airport has been asking for many years in order to avoid an aviation disaster. The governor said all sectors should integrate the tasks and cooperate to seriously tackle the problems ahead of the tourism season and the 41st National Games --the Chiang Mai games-- in December. hellodolly Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Sounds like the chicken that ran around yelling the sky is falling the sky is falling the sky is falling. I would strongly suggest that the people who need blankets and warm clothing use the same ones they used last year. "The cold spell, haze, forest fires and drought were major concern that the province would tackle with the cooperation from private and civic sectors." And when nothing changes it will not be the governments fault it will be the private and civic sectors at fault.
lizardtongue Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Chiang Mai Governor Thanin Supasan has announced the coming annual cold spell and atmospheric haze as priorities of concern on the provincial agenda, particularly the flying paper lanterns released during the Loy Krathong festival later this month . I have never heard of pollution being referred to as atmospheric haze! One night of flying lanterns is responsible for 3/4 months of pollution? If it is such a concern wouldn't the simple answer be to ban the sale of said lanterns? Of course that would do wonders for the booming tourist industry! Oh sorry I see where this is going, the tourists are to blame for the atmospheric haze! As for the attempt to ponce half a million items of clothing, I suggest that they don't light fires and use the 20,000 Baht from the Gov. to buy them, then when at the end of the 'fire season' if they get the other 100,000 Baht, think ahead a little and purchase more warm clothing! F@(%!*# joke!
cooked Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 I would move to Chiang Mai immediately if I wasn't afraid that my asthma would kill me.
Rob8891 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Yup, that cold season is a real b1tch.... -4C in Scottish Highlands when I went out to the ice-covered car this morning. If it gets cooler, I think I'm going to have to stop wearing shorts....
asiawatcher Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Cold snaps in CM? Okay I'll play - roll the dice and tell me how low we can go...
kaptainrob Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Cold snaps in CM? Okay I'll play - roll the dice and tell me how low we can go... Day time highs may fall to a chilly 26c ... the wife's going shopping for a cardigan today <deleted>... Night temps can drop to a near freezing 13c ... might need a blanket and a cuddle Up in the hills it gets a lot cooler... most of us will enjoy the crisp clear days and take advantage of the scenery before the burn-off's begin. 2
ricardofel Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 What a joke this pronouncement is. Burning is rampant as I write and ride my bike 70 kilometers outside of CM-pollution may be the worst for the coming 5 months since it's already begun. The lanterns being a concern for air safety-OF COURSE they are, but who cares???? I do, but not the CM population. All it is...is talk, talk, talk and nothing ever changes!
Iusedtocycle Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 13oC at night??? Sounds great. I could do with some of that!!

Yeah.. come to think of it you made a really valid point,.. why dont they use the warm blankets and clothing they were given the year before (and before that also)? Do they sell them in springtime or use them for other things such as farming or fishing that would ruin them?
cloudhopper Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 Relax, the boys from Bangkok are here - "He said all the problems would be rectified by next year."
