BANGKOK, Nov 2 - Noppadon Pattama, legal advisor of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, confirmed today that the former prime minister is scheduled to meet Myanmar President Thein Sein in Naypyidaw next week.

Speaking at a news briefing at the ruling Pheu Thai Party headquarters, Mr Noppadon said the former Thai premier will meet the Myanmar leader next Thursday during a three-day private visit to Myanmar's Tachilek bordering the northern Thai province of Chiang Rai from Nov 8 to10.

The confirmation was made following media reports about the former Thai premier's planned visit to the neighbouring country.

Mr Thaksin's legal advisor said the former Thai premier would meet Myanmar President Thein Sein as an old friend. He said they would neither discuss investment in Myanmar nor the Dawei deep sea port project.

The ousted premier will also meet a group of Thai businessmen and some Thais next Friday. He will make merit the following day in Tachilek and meet supporters who will cross the Thai-Myanmar border to greet him there.

Ousted in a 2006 coup, Mr Thaksin fled into exile ahead of a 2008 conviction on a conflict of interest charge. He was sentenced in absentia to two years in jail by the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders and is a convicted felon who is avoiding serving his jail sentence.

His legal advisor brushed aside a question that his planned private visit to the neighbouring country would cause trouble to Thai police tasked to track and return him to stand trial in Thailand, saying his client's outstanding arrest warrant was the result of a coup which is unacceptable to the international community. BANGKOK: -- Fugitive prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will visit Myanmar for three days next week and will meet Myanmar President Thein Sein, his legal advisor Noppadol Pattama said Friday.

Noppadol told a press conference that Thaksin would visit Myanmar on Thursday and stay until Saturday.

Thaksin would meet Thein Sein in the new capital of Nay Pyi Taw upon his arrival on Thursday.

On Friday, Thaksin would meet leading Pheu Thai MPs and Thai businessmen in Tachilek, a border town opposite Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district.

Noppadol said the visit to Tachilek would be Thaksin's closest presence to Thailand since he visited Champasak in Laos earlier this year.

Noppadol said Thaksin would make merit at the Shwedagon Pagoda on Saturday morning and would have a chance to meet red shirts and other Thais who crossed the border to meet him.

Noppadol said Thaksin's supporters should stay overnight on the Thai side and cross the border in the morning because accommodation on the Thai side was cheaper and more easily available than on the Myanmar side.

Noppadol also said Thaksin would not visit the Dawei deepsea port as earlier reported.

He said Thaksin would only pay a courtesy call on Thein Sein as an old friend and would not discuss the deepsea port or other projects. He said Thaksin would not negotiate any business deals with Thein Sein and that the Thai government, led by Thaksin's sister Yingluck Shinawatra, would not have conflicts of interest when negotiating the deepsea port project with Myanmar.

Thaksin's Myanmar visit only 'courtesy call'

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra will go on a three-day visit to Myanmar next week during which he will meet President Thein Sein, the ex-leader's legal adviser Noppadol Pattama said yesterday.

Thaksin will be in Myanmar from next Thursday to Saturday and will meet the president in Nay Pyi Taw upon arrival.

On Friday, Thaksin is scheduled to meet with some key Pheu Thai MPs and Thai businesspeople in Tachilek, which is directly across the border from Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district.

Noppadol told the media that Thaksin would first make merit at Shwedagon Pagoda on Saturday morning before meeting with his red-shirt supporters, adding that people were advised to spend the night on the Thai side of the border because accommodation is cheaper.

He also said Thaksin would not visit the Dawei deep-sea port as reported earlier, and that he was only paying a courtesy call to Thein Sein and would not discuss Dawei or other projects.

Noppadol said Thaksin would also not try to make any business deals with the president so the Thai government, led by his sister Yingluck Shinawatra, does not have any problems when trying to negotiate the deep-sea project with Myanmar.

Thaksin will be closest to Thailand when he visits Tachilek, he said, adding that the last time he was this close was when he visited Champasak in Laos. He also confirmed that Myanmar authorities had agreed to let Thaksin's supporters meet him at the border town.

However, Noppadol said, Thaksin would not be settling any differences that people might have for failing to win a Cabinet seat. He said the leader was only meeting with his supporters to discuss general matters.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul said he had no knowledge of Thaksin's plan to visit the neighbouring country, adding that he had not spoken to him for a while and that the Thai Embassy in Myanmar had not told him about the pending visit.

As for Thai-Myanmar cooperation on the deep-sea port project, Surapong said a team of six ministers, led by a vice president of Myanmar, would arrive in Bangkok on Tuesday evening and attend an official meeting at Government House the following morning.

He added that two meetings, led by two different panels, would be held with the Myanmar team. The Myanmar-Thailand Joint High-Level Committee, jointly chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong and a Myanmar vice president, will hold the first meeting.

The second meeting will be held by the Myanmar-Thailand Joint Coordinating Committee, which is co-chaired by PM's Office Minister Nivatthamrong Boonsongpaisal and Myanmar’s industry minister.

After the meetings, Kittiratt will escort the Myanmar entourage to Laem Chabang deep-sea port so they can get an idea of how the Dawei port would be developed.

On Friday, Thaksin is scheduled to meet with some key Pheu Thai MPs

They are well on their way to the 10 million Red Shirts to amass at the border to escort Thaksin back.

The other paper reports that all eight Pheu Thai Party MP's from Korat, along with 400 Red Shirts plan to meet Thaksin in Burma.

Suu Kyi should snub him

This Suu Kyi that told other countries to boycott Myanmar, while knowing that the lack of medicine will kill thousands?

So the Red Shirts plan to visit the unelected head of the Thai government when he goes to Myanmar to cozy up with his old friend, the military junta chief.

Can someone remind me what UDD used to stand for?

How very interesting, didnt the fugitive criminal already cause a conflict of interest for Yingluck?

"The Dawei project is important for Yingluck as it was initiated by her elder brother and former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra years ago. It is Yingluck’s mission to make Thaksin’s dream come true.......... Thaksin, who has good connections with Myanmar leaders, paved the way for his younger sister to build up the project since her arrival in office and her visit to Myanmar for the first time last year. Thaksin reportedly visited Myanmar a few days ahead of Yingluck. He also visited the Dawei project’s site as well as discussed with Myanmar leaders possible industries to operate in the Dawei project". http://www.tavoyanvoice.com/eng/2012/10/09/yingluck-works-hard-on-her-dawei-dream/
