Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi proposed in Parliament last Friday that Rangoon University be reopened for undergraduates studies, according to a report by The Myanmar Times. Suu Kyi said a regulatory team should be formed to oversee the refurbishment of the university. Her proposal was approved by a vote of 248 to 64, despite the objections of the deputy minister for education. The motion was supported by most military-appointed MPs, who hold 25 percent of seats. The university was the venue of a speech delivered by US President Barack Obama on Monday.
