Tomás Ojea Quintana, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Burma, on Tuesday welcomed the Burmese government’s latest commitments on human rights. Quintana said the government’s pledges had “tremendous potential to effect significant improvements in the country’s human rights situation.†On Nov. 18, the government said it would resume prison visits by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), set up a mechanism to review prisoner lists, address the situation in Arakan State and invite the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to establish a country office.
