Anyone know if there's a local bus going from the new bus station to the local bus area in Phuket Town? And if there is any details: what to look for, where to catch it and how much?

Yes, one of the pink buses services the route from main bus station to local bus station.

Just don't plan on taking a tuk tuk or a motosai taxi from one to the other. The last time I tried that they refused to take my gf and I. Both the tuk tuk and the motosai drivers at the interprovencial bus station would only take us all the way to our destination (Kata) for 500B.

What little cheap public transport there is in Phuket is made as difficult as possible by the tuk tuk/taxi mafia.

I get a lot of customers on a budget and they often ask for the cheapest way from the bus station. It was easy before, now a bit more difficult but these backpackers need a bit of adventure sometimes! All too easy in the days of the internet.
