Sting, the former front man for the Pop group The Police appeared for one night only in Bangkok on Wednesday in a series of concerts by top musicians from around the world, including Elton John who followed on Thursday.

The well attended concert was one stop off on his Asian tour and drew a huge audience of both Thai nationals and foreigners. Bangkok is, this year, hosting a number of music stars over the winter period and proving to be an excellent magnet to the very best of the world’s musicians.

Unlike previous tours, Sting has returned to his roots, dumped the orchestrated shows of the past and is currently touring with a small but fabulous band which, limited to a drummer, guitarist, violinist, Keyboard player and single backing singer, provided a brilliant output and a very intimate feel to the evening. Add to that the fact that audience sung most of his choruses for him and you got the impression that he was enjoying himself intensely too.

The Impact arena in Bangkok is an easily accessible venue where ticketing is well managed and seating is well spaced. The acoustics and sound, sadly, still need some tweaking but the overall atmosphere is always party style. Parking is a difficult one, especially since new buildings have filled former vacant areas previously used for that purpose. Nevertheless it is one of the very best arenas for entertainment in Asia.

Security, somehow, failed to impress as they “accidentally” allowed a crowd to move toward the stage, blocking the views of many who had bought front tickets. Several hundred people made it to the front and refused to move back as a team of 6 security staff failed miserably to encourage them. In years gone by such a flop would have caused a riot elsewhere in the world, but here, the well behaved audience simply took it on the chin and enjoyed every moment
