The Hit And Run Restaurant "review" Thread

I agree. I'm always very skeptical of places trying to be all things to all people. They usually turn out to be nothing special for everyone. Interesting news about the specialist chef leaving. Perhaps the food I had would have been better if I went earlier. In any case if they had such a chef they should have made a big public noise about it. Then it might have had a chance.
Oh well!

FYI Marugame Udon at Big C Extra is now closed.  I'm assuming/hoping they just packed up to move to Terminal 21.  Would be a shame if they left Pattaya completely.

Poor Central company ! It will be a real fail at Pattaya. Everybody is soon moving to Terminal 21.

It's expensive, small portions and no better than British High Street take alway curries, which are pretty good. I spent a year in India and rarely had decent food there. Hygiene is illusonary in all restaurants except where there is an open kitchen. IBN is a  good place for unadventurous diners but is worth trying once but it does not have an extensive desert menu. Tooting Bec, Southall, Brick Lane in London and Rusholme in Manchester and many other Northern Cities have better Indian food  than India..

Used to eat regularly down the curry mile in Rusholme. Good but not as good as India. Not even as good as in Indian peoples homes in Manchester.

No good Indian restaurants in Pattaya, which is why they rarely have any customers. Many are "fronts" for other "businesses".

Also, most likely places, in Pattaya, to get Delhi Belly, probably due to their questionable ingredients. OK if you want to try "Soi Dog Jalfrezi."

Rusholme was better on the old days..I mean the 70s as was Brick  Lane. The best Indian food I had recently  was in Bristol in the Mint Rooms in Clifton.  Super take of a modern twist on traditional Indian food. Not cheap though.  In India the best food was in Goa, In Kashmir during Ramadan and at over night truck stops. That was the early 70s.

Yep, travelled round South India (Goa, Kerala)  many years ago. Best food I've eaten anywhere ever. Even better than Thai food!

Tried a couple of restaurants that specialised in South Indian food in Rusholme. Just not the same.

The thalies and dosas at Lovely restaurant on the same Sai 2 side and south of The Avenue are decent for me. But, boy am I inexperienced in Indian food. My favourite Indian place in Asia Is Baba in HCMC's Pham Ngu Lao section. Packed, friendly and great food. Another top place nearby.

I hadn't even realized that place does dosas but I did have a quite lovely Thali there that featured a piece of tandoori chicken. However I do remember the piece of Mutton in the Thali was literally impossible to chew and I certainly tried. So because of that I only visited the one time.

I tend to go to South Indian vegetarian places for dosas. There are a number of them. I would be hard pressed to say best in town for that. I would be a project to try them all.

Hunger games?

Didn't realise that you were a mod, what gives you the right to dictate to others what we do and don't write about in this topic?

Both The manic and I commented on Indian restaurants in Pattaya compared to Indian restaurants elsewhere. Problem with that?

I would comment on Reds, a great place for a party, Issan food, live Issan music but food not great. Ja Toi is the best food I've eaten in Pattaya, love the restaurant, love the staff, but went there last week and no longer do my favourite dish, geng masseman with pork short rib, and the other food was poor. Suspect that they have a new chef.

All in all I feel your pain, making a career reviewing restaurants in Pattaya, when there aren't any worthy of a review.

I could review a couple of excellent food carts if you wish.
I'll ignore your ill mannered personal digs and thank you for for posting the local restaurant info that you did. Negative comments on restaurants are just as welcome as raves.

No English Name Chinese Tour Bus Restaurant

Pattanakorn Market (Coloseum)

Tepprasit road

Jomtien

http://colosseumshowpattaya.com/location.html#home

Going towards Sukhumvit from Tappraya, this is the first (smaller) Chinese tour bus restaurant located on the right side of the market.

NOT the much bigger Ching Kong (that has one of those notorious tour bus buffets) on the other side of the market. I haven't had the balls yet to walk into Ching Kong (I don't like the vibe).

Referring back to the OP, to me the most useful reason for the continued existence of this thread is for people to share LESSER KNOWN places.

We all know about Kiss and the Sizzler salad buffet (or wish we didn't).

But how about that unusual little dive in your local soi ... most of us do not know and will never know unless you tell us.

So in that vein, here is one I bet people haven't checked out.

It's a Thai and Chinese restaurant designed for tour busloads of Chinese tourists!

There are many of these places around town.

Some of them will send you packing right quick if you're not with a Chinese tour. Others will offer menus in Chinese only. Others will offer menus in English as well.

You can't know unless you walk in and ask.

In my experience the  a la carte food at such places (those that will serve it) is from mediocre to poor.

But I found an exception.

I walked in because of Chinese signs but it turns out the majority of food is more on the Thai side. (Turns out they don't have a Chinese chef.) The welcome was very, very warm. (Surprise!) and the prices weren't bad either.

I was shown a very limited picture menu and also a group tour menu of sets.

The former was coherent as the staff gathered around and told me what it was (no English) but the group tour sets pictures were hard to understand.

I was told show them any dish picture online (Chinese or Thai) and they will try to cook it!

I decided on two items from the a la carte menu.

A Chinese style steamed fish PLA KAPONG 220 and cabbage stir friend in fish sauce 100.

The fish was excellent!

Not saying it is all that hard to find similar dishes in lots of places but good is good and if this place was more convenient for me I'd go regularly just for that fish.

Other a la carte dishes --

Squid w/ salted egg 150

Pork leg (described as house specialty) 150

While near this restaurant, walk on the adjacent street going away from Tepprasit and notice a buzzing Halal noodle restaurant. The place was packed with local Muslims (yes you could tell). I am curious to try and see if they have more than noodle soup.

Bronx Pizza

Soi Diana

1 slice 70 baht / 2 slices 125

Eat in or takeaway

http://www.bronxpizzapattaya.com/menu.html

Pick your slices and they will warm up.

I suppose this is meant to be NYC style pizza.

I haven't spend a lot of time in NYC to eat slices but I don't think it really measured up to that (it's the water?) but it reminded me a lot of Blondies student hangout pizza in Berkeley, CA.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g32066-d377651-Reviews-Blondie_s_Pizza-Berkeley_California.html

If you're looking for Italian Italian pizza, fuhgetaboutit!

Two slices (on offer were BBQ chicken, sausage, and pepperoni) of the BBQ chicken were quite filling.

The pizza was a little too sweet for my taste, but I'm not sure if it was the tomato sauce or the BBQ sauce on the chicken that did that (or both).

This seems to be popular with the punters.

I can see why it's popular but I found the crust kind of heavy handed.

I do like their 'tude --

SICILIAN PIZZA?? HELL NO!!! It is

enough work keeping the place going without having to deal with the hellish process of making Sicilian pizza. No wonder those Sicilians are all nuts!!

So would I but it is just too far away.

Anybody know anywhere else with similar type fish dish around the price JT mentioned (220baht)?

Hello, the most healthy fish is sardine, but not the usual dirty Thai sardines cans, so do you know where to buy good quality sardines or any restaurant serving it ?

At least it should be King oscar but some are a lot more expensive and even better. Never found a restaurant in Thailand having this when expensive and nice restaurants in Europe always serve it.

Thanks.

A sardine is a small European pilchard. I can't imagine any "expensive and nice" restaurant serving tinned sardines. I only ever seen fresh sardines served in a restaurant, save maybe, on toast in a transport café.

Many other fish equally nutritious, try makerel (tinned makerel is used in Thai cooking), or herring.

If you insist on tinned sardines, most supermarkets, in Thailand, sell them. They won't be "the usual dirty Thai sardine cans" because sardines aren't canned in Thailand.

Namsan
Korean BBQ restaurant
Real Korean not Thai style Korean
2nd (CORRECTED) road in the Koreatown open mall, Burger King on corner. North Pattaya north of Marina mall opposite side.

This is a BBQ set and all you can eat Korean restaurant that includes a buffet.

They have a new option. No grilled meats. Just the buffet for 199.

I looked at it at 8pm and a tray was empty and the food looked tired but there was a great variety including fried chicken, stews, and Korean sushi.
It seems it would be a good deal when the food is fresher probably earlier in the evening.
For the BBQ deals there is a two person minimum.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g293919-d12585365-Reviews-Namsan_Grill_Korean_BBQ_BUFFET-Pattaya_Chonburi_Province.html

Update on this.
I did try this offer.

For the 199, you get vermicelli stir fry, fried chicken (sweet or not), onion rings, Korean sushi, egg cakes, mackerel pieces, rice cake sticks in chili sauce, spicy meat stew, seaweed soup, small bento box, water/tea, and rice. Surprise! A very nice freshly cooked spicy soft tofu stew w/ raw egg was served at the table! That made it much better overall. Weirdly, no kimchi.

The food was pretty good making it worth it for 199. The point of the buffet is mostly for people doing the meat BBQ. People fill up on the buffet and likely eat less of the more expensive meat, wink wink nod nod. The fried items were gross though because of sitting too long even though they have a heat lamp, but that's buffets for you. Can't complain for 199 but not something I would want all that often either.

To be clear, the 199 offer includes no meat and no BBQ. Pay more to get that.

It's a Korean meat BBQ restaurant. Which means when you purchase a BBQ set you get raw meat to BBQ yourself on a table unit. With the buffet deal there is no meat to do any BBQ. The buffet is also included with any BBQ deals. Yes, there is some meat in some of the buffet items, but nothing to BBQ.

"Sky Restaurant"

at The Bay Mall, Pattaya Beach road, North Pattaya

Marketing as Chinese, Thai seafood, and Dim Sum

I noticed some large window adverts for a Chinese restaurant passing this "mall" on baht bus so I went to the trouble of actually checking it out.

The Bay Mall is a not that new anymore open air beach facing mall that by all indications is just not attracting tenants.

I ventured up one level from the street to see what this restaurant is about. I should have realized I was entering a ghost town zone when some Thai security workers gave me a look of foreboding as I took the elevator. The space is large but all it is are the window signs. The interior that I could see was entirely empty and there was no sign of any activity.

Dead malls are a big thing in many parts of the world. But that usually means they were alive before.

Oh well!
