My view is that all humans are racist. Everywhere. It's a matter of degree and severity and harm done, if any. I think we are hard wired for racism as a species. So the answer: yes.

probably the most honest answer ive heard, we may all be wether we know it or not

You said : "just seems odd because it is thaivisa"; this is technically a racist remark.

I think he was talking about rascism - discrimination against rascals.

I don't think TV is rascist at all, in fact many of our most esteemed members are obvious rascals.

Thai isn't a race.

Saying 'all Thais are stupid' is the same as saying 'all Irish are stupid' or 'all Germans are control freaks'

Now saying 'all Asians are stupid' would be racist, but there aren't any threads suggesting that.

I would say that racism is not the the main theme with TV posts that can be construed as negative towards Thai people, but bigotry by some TV members is.

From a race & ethnicity perspective Thailand is composed of Thai 75%, Chinese 14%, other 11%. I guess all of whom would identify themselves as Thai nationals.

Is telling the truth rascist?

As the many posts on thaivisa have proven, people take offence at the slightest of things and turn differences of opinion into personal attacks. There are only a handful of basic truths, and everything else are personal opinions.

Is telling the truth racist?

It depends on what the truth it is, the truth by your perception or the truth that really exists. Some people here are like something that thais call "// Thai script edited out //" Despite none of back up information especially in cultural topics but never hesitate to prejudge by their own standards.

there might be no threads but uncountable postings which expressis verbis suggest Thais are stupid.

and not a single day passes without dozens of these kind of postings!

in my view the spelling "rascism" and "rascist" is clearly racism tongue.png

I was humouring the OP, Naam. Read the spelling in the heading of the topic. Of course, if I was an American I would write "humoring". In any case we all knew what he meant. However, I think we all know the intention of the topic, which was to ask why there is so much Thai bashing on thaivisa. We could spend all day pointing out real problems that are evident in each and every country. But correcting then is something entirely different. Thailand has hundreds of faults, as does Canada, the USA and European countries. Gay bashing used to be quite common in Canada, but not so much any more. After the second world war there was a lot of justified anger directed at Japanese people because they were an easily identified ethnic group. It was not so much against Germans because in a caucasian country you can't pick out a German from a Jew until they speak. People want to vent when they think they are being picked on. It's only natural to become defensive.

For those who like to express views about certain ethnic groups, I would suggest learning how to spell racist first.

If some posters describe people of a certain ethnic group as having general characteristics, general intelligence levels, general behaviour patterns and general skills or capability limitations, than yes, they are racist.

There is no other way to describe these attitudes.

There is a world of difference between being down right insulting and articulating a few facts by personal opinion. The problem is that many of those inflicted by low intelligence and the ignorant are unable to differentiate as to what amounts to an opinion and what is being abusive and insulting.

You make some very valid points. And to answer the OP, YES, there are a whole lot of racist attitudes permeating in these threads. People are constantly judging the entire Thai populace based upon the one or two Thais that they've met. Heck, there was a thread recently titled "Thais and their whistles." How many Thais do you know who even have whistles, other than parking attendants? And then there's the TV Thai News threads. Tons of racist monkeys hanging out on that forum.

But I understand the source of these racist attitudes. In the US, white racists tend to be the less educated and disenfranchised, those who feel a need to blame someone for their crappy lot in life. The truly racist folks on TV tend to be from this demographic.

I don't know if I agree with that. I think it may depend on the area of education. Start a topic that says Asian Engineers are better than Engineers from a particular Western country and see what happens.biggrin.png

Racists don't believe in social integration because the mixing of groups would dilute their superior group. And yet, there seems to be a lot of 'mixing' going on...

I don't think Thais mix for darker shades eh?

Or suggesting that Thais could manage things as well as the chaps at Windscale or Three Mile Island or Fukushima or Chernobyl.

Maybe xenophobic is more apt than racist.

Oh yes.... and a handful of ignorance.

The only difference between them and our hosts is the fierce nationalism of the latter.

Not racist,but maybe cynical wink.png ??

Oh yes! The coolness of the faux cynicism chic, born of the 'been there, done that' illusion.

A few here do it well, most of the others merely strive to parody any real debate.

There can be two meanings even when saying exactly the same thing. It all has to do with intent. Good friends can say outrageous things to each other and both just laugh. But, if a stranger were to say the same thing with a sneer there would be a battle. One black American can jokingly use the "N" word to another of his group, but if a white person were to say the same thing then all hell could break loose. There have been many discussions on thaivisa about the word "farang" and how it is used, and what is meant by when a Thai uses it. There are a few who adamantly think it is a rascist word, and yet others (including myself) just think it is a general term used to cover all of us with white skin and a caucasian background.

i dont feel farang is arascist term at all.

but saying for eg, all thai people are stupid is.

and isaan girls cop it more so here, thats a fact, in any language.

IF someone says ALL Thai people are stupid that cannot be counted as racist. A person who says all Thai are stupid is a fool.

Don't forget the highly educated PC types who use "racism" as a political weapon in order to win elections. Racism is not limited to the less educated members of society.

I agree Thai people aren't a race. Thai people are an ETHNIC group, the majority ethnic group in the nation of Thailand. But in social reality, racism occurs against ethnic groups and strictly anthropologically speaking race doesn't exist biologically at all.

Are they even the "majority ethnic group" in Thailand anymore? I mean, if you exclude all the ones that are mixes?

It's more meaningful called just a NATIONALITY these days.

Give the guy a break. He's not stupid, he's just "in a rush". That's why he decides to put more letters in words that are necessary.

It's really irrelevant regarding the issue of racism. Racism exists everywhere. Races don't. It's about social constructs in people's MINDS. It's not about anthropological facts. People can and are racist about perceived races, ethnic groups, nationalities, and religions.

It's pretty much ALL about social constructs.

Thai people might think Burmese people are inferior.

Take some Thai and Burmese to Alabama and some morons are going to call both of them the G-word.
