Haven't looked extensively through this as yet, but all-up prices compared with the sales early last year are considerably more expensive.

Particularly Australia to Thailand.

The trick with Airasia is to buy the first few hours, or the first day, during a super sale. I have paid bkk to Bali, $100 rt, Surat, KL, Lombok, $150, Surat to bkk, 700 baht rt, etc. You have to know how to use their system. Great Deals to be found.

Well then, this is a return I did BKK-PNH 'less' than one year ago!

Some extra's in there as well, without them the total would have been a whisker over THB2000 Return.

I notice that in fishooks scan the prcessing fee was 100 Baht, I booked a couple of tickets to Yangon and the processing fee is now 160 Baht each.

Ended up paying 4,216 Baht for two return tickets, haven't booked seats or checked luggage yet, didn't think that was too bad but certainly not as cheap as they were.

I found the promotional fares were loaded onto their website a tad before 23.00, Thai time.

What I can see with a fairly quick look, is the basic airfare component for MEL-BKK is A$120, more now with this current sale, than what I paid during a previous A.A. sale.

With the 'previous' sale last year which see's me travelling MEL-BKK in a couple of weeks time, the base fare I paid was A$70.

The base fare in the current sale for travel at the same time next year, 2014, is A$190...... and that has been on display as a Promo Fare almost since the start of this now sale.

Not complaining at all, much cheaper than Jetstar, but just noticing a fairly big difference!

A few years ago when shopping for flights to Oz (Perth, Darwin) the best deals seemed to be with Tiger. But you may have to get to Singapore first.

But again, with all these carriers, mind you luggage weight. Even if you think you're going to be a little bit over go for the overage fee in advance, it is nothing compared to what they're going to sock you with if you're over the limit at check-in. When checking in at Changi nearly everyone ahead of me in the queue had to make a trip to the cashier counter to pay the cost, it ain't cheap.

I really hate the way they do this, the word free being redefined. No one gives a rat's arse between admin fees, service fees etc, they just want to know what the g-dammed ticket is going to cost. They should just state the price, unless options are being offered -- "I'll take 1 ticket to KL, but no landing fee please." Could be a good sketch for the likes of John Cleese and Eric Idle to put on.

There was a famous music venue in NYC in the 1960s that, once a week, would have a "free night." Admission was $1.50.

Very good for those who can plan their travel 9 mos in advance...some of us are a little more spontaneous biggrin.png

I've booked BKK-SFO return on ANA business for 100k for this fall so yes, if you can plan far ahead one can save allot.

I have found that FOR ME when i book way in advance it kinda forces me to ultimately get off my butt and travel as it's non refundable....if i just keep waiting i tend to put it off and put it off...i have been thinking of going to angor wat for several years and haven't done it...but now that i am booked for this fall i bet i will actually go....spontaneous almost always cost a lot more and worse for me often ends up with no trip at all...74 $ usd roundtrip bkk pnh is a heck of a deal....

of course air asia knows that many people will book trips far in advance and pay and then never show up so they keep the money.....all part of their game plan no doubt....

I got a flight from BKK to Kota Kinabalu for free with AA, but had around 1000B in fees. One way flight. From there to Kuching for about the same, and then from Singapore to BKK for about the same. Did this a few years ago. Tough to beat! But took me a lot of work to get the tickets. Servers were busy, screens timed out. I actually didn't think I got the tickets until I got an email confirmation a few days later.

Yes, one positive thing about the recent sale was that it was easy to get on, grab an itinerary and go through the various stages easily and fast.

Either they have upped the efficiency of their system..............................or, not that many of us are, or will be in the air!

I don't understand how no shows would benefit AA? They can't resell the seat as its been paid for and they have no way of knowing who will show and how won't...is it that they save money on jet fuel because the plane is lighter?

Posted

I did a quick eval of the sale. I'm late, so maybe prices did go up. But I was able to get a better price from BKK to Hanoi in the next month or so than I was for November. Not by much, but by 25% or so. Crazy.

Air Asia have never been cheap unless you have no baggage, don't want to eat and don't mind sitting in a sardine can. I used to fly with them between SIN and BKK but it all came to an end very ceremoniously when I tried to move to an exit seat after take-off. The plane was half empty but the cabin staff demanded I pay extra to sit in an exit seat. What utter crap!

Rather that few people ever try to reclaim the airport-tax/handling-charges, which they've paid-for, but the airline won't now incur.

Of all the things to complain about A.A., and I've had many, unless you are very unlucky you will be flying with one of the youngest fleet in air miles around Asia.

Their seating in economy is no more "Sardined" than any of the "Majors" SQ,CX,QF for example and the actual seats are quite comfortable.

If you cannot decide in advance to pre-order a meal and you reckon their on-board meals are expensive, perhaps you should walk to the airport to save a few bucks on petrol or a cab?

As for changing to an "Unpaid" Exit Row seat, suggest you try that with 99% of the other buses in the sky......................You must have been very lucky in the past trying and succeeding pulling that one off!

Don't get me wrong, A.A. in being a real budget mob, really comes over as just that and often I would prefer to use some of the 500,000+ flyer points with Qantas/One World.

But....., for the present whilst hopping around Asia as I'm mainly doing recently, I'll take full advantage of what I get from Air Asia.

The money saved and that would be heaps, can be later used for spending on the ground, and I'll use my points to get a better seat in the "BUS"

Exactly why I like flying AA on short hops around Asia...I don't need to include in MY ticket price crappy food I won't eat and luggage I won't check. I also like buying a "red" seat and that they enforce keeping the Cheap Charlie's from moving to the empty seats adjacent to me? Those that need these services can pay for them...I don't want to cross-subsidize them. :)

No refund, no change of date(unless you pay again in full!) and no change of destination are allowed. I just lost 3200 baht 20 days prior to my flight. First experience, I will be careful next time choosing AA.

Change of date only costs 1,000 Baht, plus you have to pay the difference in fares.

I guess that's to stop people booking when they have an offer for free seats within a limited flight schedule and then wanting to change their booking to a date outside the special offer window which is priced at notmal fares.

You can aslo buy insurance from them so if you can't make the flight on the date you booked you can change dates, or cancel and the insurance covers the cost. You might want to consider that next time.
