I live in bangkok, I'm thinking of buying a 1990's car from an expat in pattaya, seems very cheap 50k, I don't want to be conned, anyone give me advice on things to look out for please

This is just simply one of those things where you will either have the knowledge to have a pretty good idea the car is ok, or not. It sounds to me like you don't. It is a gamble. If you really want to go for it your best bet would be to find a friend who knows, or to ask him questions and get a feel for how honest you think he is.

i suspect all those who claim they would never need, have, or use a car in Bangkok have either never driven, never driven in Bangkok or simply cant afford a car.

dont knock it til you have tried it.

Lots of cars and pickups from the 80"s and 90's about, some used every day and never give any problem. or breakdown.... If it is a Thai built car then anyone can repair it if something goes wrong + plenty of used spare parts about

Just be sure it has a Book [log book] and in the sellars name, and that the road tax is up to date

You need a car to get OUT of Bangkok. You don't need a car IN it.

I see enough evidence outside to knock without trying it. Why would I want to sit in traffic for 2 hours every morning and every night (and considerably more when it rains)?

When I'm working in BKK offices / office hours I take the sky train because the traffic is too bad... BUT, I need my wife to take me to and collect me from the sky train because taxi's at those times are difficult to get.

When I am not working and just spending my days in BKK, I will travel around the city outside of peak rush hours, a car offers great convenience even though it is probably slower than taking the sky-train... (I won't take moto-taxis).

A car also places you in a healthy state of mind and removes the city claustrophobia, at the drop of a hat you can escape BKK and drive anywhere any time...

I agree, a car is not essential, but I see it as necessary for a comfortable existence.

On Topic: for a 50k car I would also factor in likely repair bills..

Bangkok is okay for driving, I never bothered with a car though when I was living full time there, now I spend more time out of Bangkok, the convenience of a car is far greater.
