I do not eat tinned meat myself, flesh meat is cheaper and better

I have eaten it years ago on camping trips when we had no refrigeration

IT is expensive here and there is no reason it should be, it is rubbish in my opinion

Goods imported into Australia from Thailand have a 5% import duty/ tax which includes rice, seafood, tinned foods, vehicles etc

Which makes them very competitive on the open market and regularly cheaper than Australian manufactured goods

Australian goods imported into Thailand cop huge import duties/ taxes even though they are not manufactured or

produced in Thailand of a equal quality

A example is a large ford SUV i saw at the local dealer recently 2.7M baht its Australian made and on road there with with all costs included and a full

3 year roadside assistance warranty 1.4M baht

There is a free trade agreement but the way around that is high import taxes even on items not made or produced here

No way can you call spam or apples luxury items except in Thailand

I hear what you are saying but the Austrilian consumer benefits from the relatively low duty on imports- and the Thai consumer suffers.

I agree its the Thai consumer that suffers, makes no difference to me i pay about the same price in Australia as i do for imported goods here

But the Thai manufactured goods are much cheaper than the imported if you can find them on the supermarket shelves

Why should not average Thai be able to afford imported fruits etc, The same as Aussies can afford Thai imported fruits and other products

Oh I believe this is only a part of the territory where it seems "more for a few is better than fair for all"

Please explain your comment

Peter you answered that more or less with the sentence below, add some logic and experience you have from living here and its very clear why!

Why should not average Thai be able to afford imported fruits etc, The same as Aussies can afford Thai imported fruits and other products

sydney or thailand? living in thailand is dirt cheap by comparison. pad thai in thailand = 40baht sydney = 400bath.

I think the OP is making the point that prices on Phuket are "Insane" when compared to the rest of Thailand, not Sydney.

A quick comparison of products and services prices on the island, comparred to elsewhere in Thailand, and it's obvious Phuket is a lot more expensive.

Of course, Phuket is a lot more cheaper than Sydney, except for a few things. Some that come to my mind are short distance transport, wine and cheese.

Phuket is more expensive because everything a expat may want is available here

We have explored Thailand as far as Cha Am, no other town or province has the same goods and services available

It may be more expensive than other areas in Thailand but its much cheaper than so called western developed countries

IF people wish to complain about Phuket and Thailand its much cheaper to live in Laos or Cambodia and should suite them

Those same goods and services are available in Bangkok, Pataya and Chiang Mai and doubtless in other locations in Thailand also, their pricing in Phuket is unique to Phuket, let me assure you. A part of the reason for that is the shipping/transportation distance involved from Bangkok, the major reason though is beause it is believed that Phuket residents can stand it. That you have seen nothing similar between Phuket and Cha Am confirms nothing other than the fact that there is indeed very little of anything in that space.

Pattaya has a lot more in the way of western delights and a lot cheaper than Phuket. There is more competition there and they dont have to transport it all the way to Phuket. Not really my scene there but some enjoy its cheapness

WE were in Chaing Mai recently and did not see the same amount of goods and services there but it is much cheaper than Phuket

And i would not want to live there either,

You should see the price of a Green Curry in Melbourne, $28 take away with rice xtra. Now that is insane prices

One could probably buy an house or an town in Thailand for what the Green Curry would cost in the international space station.

I'm happy for you that enjoy living in Phuket and wouldn't want to live anywhere else, my reply however was in response to your comment that, "no other town or province has the same goods and services available". As for you not seeing the same amount of goods and services in Chiang Mai as you do in Phuket: that's only a reasonable thing to state if you were in Chiang Mai recently and stayed for a long period of time and got to understand where such things might exist here!

I'm sure Bangkok and Pattaya are cities in Thailand. smile.pngsmile.png

Let's be honest, we all love it here, and we all know we are paying "over the odds" for Thailand to be living here.

I think some products must be transported from Bangkok to Phuket by tuk-tuk because they are more expensive than in western countries. :) :)

Do we really need another taxi thread?

What about the price of bananas?

I paid 60 baht for some bananas the other day. When I asked, "Why banana so expensive?" She replied, "Banana delivery my shop by taxi - you pay 60 baht." smile.pngsmile.pngsmile.pngsmile.png

When my daughter was here last year bananas were 450 baht a KG in Australia

Bought a hand of nice bananas 1.4 kg in the local market yesterday for 35 baht

We eat very little chocolate and confectionery and do not worry about the price when we do

Wine, cheese, chocolate, breakfast cereal and toast spreads are the ones I notice the most.

I'm not complaining about it, just stating that some things are more expensive here.

Then, you have many other things that are more expensive on Phuket, than other places in Thailand.

Are you saying the apples are imported from The States, or just apples from anywhere are the same price as The States?
