Cancelling Non-B Visa? Renewing Passport/transfer Visa?

Recommended Posts

Hi there i need to cancel my non-b visa (the reason being i need to get a non-ed visa now...as i will be starting ABAC next sermester), i have been told i need to take a letter to immigration from my school saying i dont work there anymore? what happens after this...how long do i have to get out of the country?

Also the school never arranged a work permit for me, is this going to cause any problems?

also there is another option...i just keep stayiong on my non B until it expires...then go to laos and get my ed visa. the problem with this is that i will have to go to immagration to get them to check my old passport and put a stamp in my new one as my passport only has 1 or 2 pages left. Has anyone done this, will they just transfer the existing visa or will they need documentation again.

is there anyone who has done something like that can give me any advice.

Thank you in advance.

Do you have a Visa (been leaving Thailand every 90 days), or do you have an extension (reporting to your local Immigration office every 90 days)?

If you have a visa, it does not expire when you leave the job, get a new passport take both over to the border run with you, leave on the old one return on the new one.

If you do not have a work permit you must be on a 90 day visa entry so no action is required and you can continue to stay until it expires.

When you exit country notation of old passport/visa/entry will be transferred into the new passport - you just present both.

As you don't have a work permit and therefore cannot have extension of stay from immigration, just leave the kingdom when your current permission of stay expires.

Immigrations will not transfer a visa, just your permission to stay stamp.

poorsucker..thanks for your reply....can i just clarify this. If i leave the country with a valid visa still in my old passport...when i get to the boarder and try to get back on my new passport in will they not issue me with a 90 day entry? will they not put a check stamp in my new passport to say i have a 1year non b multi entry?

thanks

You just show passport with the valid visa on entry and the entry stay stamp is made in your current valid passport - a visa does not expire in an canceled passport and can still be used in this way. They can not transfer the visa so you must present both passports to use.

thanks guys....just a couple more questions.

firstly if i was to go to immigration with a letter from my school (they will date it a few days in advance for me so i can leave the country without getting an overstay charge) and get my non b multi entry visa cancelled....is is going to be a problem if i my school did not arrange a work permit for me?

secondly, if i was to keep doin my visa runs with my valid visa and i got a new passport then the record of my old visa would be lost if i asked to come in just as a tourist on my new passport. Then would i be able to go to Laos and apply for an ed visa because i will have a new passport and new passport number so when i apply for the visa they will have no records? am i right in thinking that.

If i am being honest i would just like to go and get it cancelled and get an ed visa......but im a bit worried because i have been working without a permit, i also dont want the hassle when im at uni and plus i will finish my work soon and will have a month break till uni starts...it would be good to get things sorted then.

Thanks again in advance

lopburi, thanks for your responses. yes it is unusual to have this visa. i got it issued in the UK....so you think i would be able to go to the laos embassy and still apply for an ed visa even though i still have a non b? also what do you think would happen if i went to immigration in bkk with a letter to canx my visa? do you think that would be ok or would that be asking for trouble as i have not had a work permit issued?

thanks

Although I do not think they would check I would not do without a work permit - in fact there is no requirement to cancel in that case anyhow and you normally just leave or continue using that visa. I suspect that would be the easy route for you to just continue as you are until the visa expires. Many people are here on such a visa (business travelers) who do not work here so it is not automatically a work permit issue and study should be fine.

lopburi thanks for that...i will keep using my visa until it expires. one last question, when i get my new passport, i just take it along with me next time i do my 90 day visa run and present both passports when i get to the boarder....and when i re enter they still use the visa from my old passport?

Thanks

You should not even have to get an ED visa from the consulate. Since all that is required for an extension to study is a non immigrant visa. With paper work from school during the last 30 days of any of your visa entries go to immigration and apply for an extension.
