The Madrid remains the oldest bar in Bangkok.

Does anyone have contact with Alan Dawson. I would like to say hello to him.

Don

Donald - any idea what year the Madrid opened? <URL Automatically Removed> refers to it being established in 1969.

Is that the Bangkok Post...or the Nation or some other place like behind a wooden door? laugh.png

1968. under the same ownership since, too. and great pizza, especially the chicken larb version!!

Sent from my spaceship.

The pizza is excellent. Service can seem somewhat intrusive at first....but once you get to know them a bit they are lovely people. smile.png

I moved to Thailand in 1984. Khun Daeng did a great job of running the place. It was a hangout for former CIA agents like Jack Shirley and Pat Landry. Tony Poe would burst in sometimes. There was a Bangkok Post article a few years ago naming the Madrid as the oldest bar in Bangkok.Chiang Rai I don't have much contact with Bangkok. I moved out of my ITF Condo last April. I lived in the Silom area for 29 years while working in 9 different provinces. Bangkok sure is not what it used to be and I am happy to have a higher quality of life in my foothills compound in Chiang rai.

Here is a 1969 picture of The Copa (now Checkinn99, when it merged with Club99 30 years ago) posted by Tywais ...inset on the right (see the HR Holden)

and a composite one of The Copa taken in 1961-62 about 12 months after Mama Noi began working there 53 years ago.

The original manager K Wipat is still alive and living in America: the Copa was opened and operating from 1956 -57 and predates the Vietnam R&R period.

On some oher www sites I have seen series of photos from fairly old bars (girlie),

in the Klong Toey (Ta Ruua) area. Bangkok port / harbour area.

Dunno if any of these still exist though.

The Prasitipol Dance Bar in Soi Wanglee would easily have been the oldest bar and (dance hall) until its recent destruction. there are plenty links to the story..
