Transport Ministry holds public hearing on construction of high speed train

UDON THANI, 18 February 2013 (NNT)-The Ministry of Transport has invited public participation in a meeting that allows stake holders in the planned construction of a high speed rail between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima to air their views on likely impacts from the project to their daily life.

The meeting, organized by the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning of the Ministry of Transport, is the fourth in a series after similar hearings were conducted in Nakhon Nayok, Saraburi and Nakhon Ratchasima.

Those attending the meeting included local administrators, members of the private sector, educational institutions and people living in the areas to be affected by the rail construction. They were divided into groups, and their opinions would be compiled for use in the improvement of the project to ensure maximum benefits to the people when it is built.

The hi-speed train project is developed to improve and enhance transportation systems in the four parts of the country. It is also expected to encourage manufacturers to set up their production bases along the rail routes.

The Cabinet last year gave nod to the construction of 4 high-speed railways between Bangkok-Chiang Mai, Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima, Bangkok-Hua Hin and between Suvarnabhumi Aiport and Pattaya. The high speed trains are expected to help reduce traffic congestion, road accidents and the cost of energy as they are running on electricity. It is expected that the project will save energy cost in the transport sector by at least 6 billion baht per year.

PM agrees to Internal Security Act enforcement in far South

By English News

BANGKOK, Feb 18 - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra gave a green light to the planned enforcement of the Internal Security Act in the insurgency-torn southern border region in the wake of a spate of bombings in Pattani province over the weekend.

National Security Council Secretary-General Paradorn Pattanathabutr spoke to reporters after a security meeting chaired by the premier here today. He said security agencies are confident that the measure would win over more insurgents to surrender after a dozen of them turned themselves in recently.

Enforcement of the law would not worsen the situation, he said, but would comply with the government's approach to tackle the problem through peaceful means. The ISA is felt to be less severe than other measures and that will help win more cooperation from local residents.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung conceded that the premier took him to task for being hesitant to tackle the long-running problem.

"The premier rebuked me for my unwillingness in solving the problem. She also instructed me to go down South and keep her updated periodically about integrated intelligence work," Mr Chalerm said.

The deputy premier said he might visit the region on assignment after the Bangkok gubernatorial election on March 3.

He said the meeting also discussed the premier's planned visit to Malaysia on Feb 28. (MCOT online news)

BKK governor candidates continue on campaign trail

BANGKOK, 18 February 2013 (NNT) - Bangkok governor candidates hit the road across the capital on Monday to secure votes and unveil policies ahead of the March 3 election.

Pheu Thai candidate Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen greeted voters at Pracha Uthit fresh market while handing out autographs to his supporters. His main election pledges include plans to build a 7-kilometer long tram route on Rattanakosin Island to feed commuters to mass transit routes such as the Purple and the Blue Lines and to extend free bus services in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, Democrat candidate running for his second term MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra has unveiled a new mobile application called Mayar at the Democrat Party Headquarters in a bid to promote the capital as a tech-savvy city. The application displays layers of information, useful links and pictures on each phone’s camera view as the user scans and views objects and locations around them. The Democrat contender plans to use the application in line with the City Hall’s existing i-Bangkok database.

Independent candidates Kosit Suvinijjit and Suharit Siamwalla on the same day joined a forum at Chandrakasem Rajabhat University to detail their views on the future of Bangkok youth before proceeding to Seacon Square Shopping Center for their campaign activities.

According to Suan Dusit Poll released on Friday, Pol Gen Pongsapat was tentatively gaining support from 44 percent of eligible voters, emerging as the frontrunner in the race for the Bangkok governor seat.
