I just wanted to take a second to post about our recent experience buying a new car, a Toyota Innova. I used this forum a lot to gather information and negotiate and wanted to share what I experienced regarding negotiating, documents required to purchase and finance and time of delivery.

Negotiating:

We had originally decided to buy second hand, but based largely from what I read here and from my Thai friends, determined that we wanted to stay away from car tents and even certified Toyota Sure cars. I went to the Toyota showroom not expecting to get a big discount, if any, but found that not to be the case. On my own, I was able get 9,000 baht off the sticker, plus the normal free insurance and servicing up to 100,000km. The kicker was that I was able to choose my own insurance company, Viriya which all of my friends tell me is the best. But following that first day, I turned over the negotiating over to our Thai helper, who is quite a good negotiator. I received another 15,000 off, free window tinting and a free spoiler. I purchased a 2012 model that had not been registered, so it was already discounted 15,000, but when it is registered, it will be registered as a 2013. So from the sticker price of 954,000, I paid 915,000.

Documents:

I do not have a work permit, so was concerned with this part of the deal since we were financing about 15%. But with my passport, non-immigrant “O” visa, and a letter from the embassy confirming our address, we had no problems. I met with the financing rep at 11:00 AM and got our approval by the end of the day.

Delivery:

This was the part I did not believe, especially considering we were buying an Innova, for which I had heard stories of 9 months waits. But I put down the deposit on Friday and picked up the car on Saturday afternoon, including the window tinting and attaching the spoiler.

So, thank you all for your posts and information. We may not have received the best deal out there, but overall, we are very satisfied and pleasantly surprised with how
fast things went and the excellent service we received.

Congrats on the purchase. Hope you enjoy the ride.

However, the Innova is not that popular and a bit long in the tooth, and so i don't think the deal you got on price or the quick delivery time would have taken much effort.

Anyway, if you are happy, and you seem to be, that is the main thing.

You're right on both points. We originally were looking at the Hyuandai H-1, but it was out of our price range. The stories I was hearing on the wait times were from a while ago, and not too recent. I also feel that we could have stuck it out a little more with the salesperson and maybe got a lower price or more free stuff, but we unexpectedly sold our vehicle the first day we had it for sale and didn't want to go too long without wheels. But as you said, we're satisfied with the car and the deal, but honestly, that was not going to be hard to accomplish considering we were driving a '99 Isuzu/Thairung Adventure.

Must feel like a nice little upgrade from the Thairung! Enjoy the car mate, and thanks for passing on the info.

If you read the stories of 9 months on here it was probably from me. My wife gave up waiting after 9 months. Supposedly Taxis had booked them up for a long time. This was booking in Bangkok I think. Would have given up before the middle of last year IIRC.

Maybe everyone wants the new model or a customer fell through, showroom model maybe.

Anyway congrats and enjoy it.
