Two men have been arrested in a dramatic police operation in central Bangkok, following a brazen shooting at a religious festival in Nakhon Sawan province that left three bystanders injured. The suspects, identified as Mr Sakda, 29, known by the alias “Men”, and Mr Phuthondit, 41, alias “Golf”, were apprehended on the morning of 17 April at a condominium in Huamark. The condo was rented by Golf’s wife, who had reportedly been sheltering the men. The pair stand accused of attempted murder after they allegedly opened fire into a crowded Songkran celebration at Wat Krok Phra Nuea in Krok Phra district. CCTV footage captured the suspects arriving on a motorcycle, firing into the crowd gathered near a music stage, and then fleeing the scene on foot before being picked up by an accomplice, identified as “Mr Singh”, in a pickup truck. According to police, Mr Singh and several associates are believed to have played a role in facilitating the escape and may face charges for aiding the fugitives. Surveillance footage shows Singh’s truck positioned near a canal bridge approximately 200 metres from the rear of the temple, where the suspects fled after the shooting. Police escorted Men and Golf back to Krok Phra Police Station where they were questioned. Officers reported that both men appeared stoic, showing no signs of remorse. During interrogation, Golf claimed the shooting was provoked after a rival group, with whom they had past animosity, allegedly threw a bottle at them during the festival. After being expelled from the temple grounds, they regrouped at the bridge and returned on a motorbike armed with a shotgun that had been stashed in Singh’s vehicle. Golf admitted to being heavily intoxicated at the time. During the transfer of the suspects back to the police station, tensions flared as relatives of the injured victims clashed verbally with the suspects’ family members. A physical altercation was narrowly avoided thanks to swift intervention by patrol officers. Both Men and Golf face charges of attempted murder and additional offences under Thailand’s firearms laws, including possession and discharge of a firearm in a public area. Police say investigations are ongoing, and all parties involved, including Mr Singh and his associates, will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. In the wake of the violence, temple authorities cancelled all remaining Songkran festivities and the annual novice ordination ceremony. Only the essential Buddhist rituals will continue. Mr Wallop Julsri, a representative of Wat Krok Phra Nuea, expressed deep regret over the incident and confirmed the temple committee will seek 300,000 baht in damages. Hit-and-Run Claims Life of Food Delivery Rider in Pathum Thani
Picture from responders. A 25-year-old delivery rider was killed in a devastating hit-and-run incident in the early hours of the morning of 18 April, in Lam Luk Ka district, Pathum Thani province. The young man was initially struck by an unidentified vehicle before being fatally run over by a car that followed shortly after. Police were alerted to the scene around 03:30 on Phahonyothin 86 Road, inbound towards Saphan Mai. Pol. Lt. Wimon Sombun, investigator with Khu Khot Police Station, arrived at the scene accompanied by emergency medical staff and Ruamkatanyu Foundation volunteers. The victim, identified as Mr Suddan, was found lying face-up in front of the Farm Chokchai company premises. He had suffered catastrophic head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Personal items including cash, a wristwatch, and documents were discovered nearby. Roughly 100 metres away, authorities found a damaged motorcycle registered in Bangkok. Also at the scene was a Honda sedan, its hazard lights flashing and its front bumper nearly detached. The driver, Mr Ek 37, told police he was unaware he had run over a person. “I was driving behind another car. I saw something lying on the road but didn’t realise it was a body. I only noticed a fallen motorcycle, so I pulled over. I didn’t witness the initial incident,” said Mr Ek, who works as a Bolt ride-hailing driver and was en route to pick up a passenger in Khlong 1, heading to Wongwian Yai. Ms Piyanuch 26, who was travelling with a different Bolt driver, that had the first collision, said she heard a loud impact during the journey and asked the driver what had happened. “He said he hit a person, then stopped the car. A second car hit the man again. I couldn’t just leave. I saw the rider had died, and the driver I was with fled the scene, even though I had already paid the fare.” A security guard stationed outside a nearby building, Mr Salaphon 30, reported hearing the initial crash. “I turned to look and saw a sedan hit something in the road.” Pol. Lt. Wimon confirmed an investigation is underway. Officers have collected photographic evidence at the scene and questioned the Honda driver further at Khu Khot Police Station. The victim’s body has been transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police investigations ate ongoing, as they are also working to locate and notify the deceased’s relatives so funeral arrangements can be made. -- 2025-04-19 -
