Phuket concrete-mixing truck kills 5-year-old boy
Phuket Gazette

PHUKET: -- A concrete-mixing truck ran over a 5-year-old Burmese boy in Thalang on Friday night.

The boy, “Juggy”, was on a motorbike with his 35-year-old mother, Mrs Namprik, and his 3-year-old sister.

The concrete-mixing truck, allegedly being driven at a high speed toward a construction site in Patong, struck the motorbike at around 9:45pm on the Baan Don-Cherngtalay Road, Roonnaphum Permphoon of the Thalang Police told the Phuket Gazette this morning.

“The bike fell down and Juggy, who was ridding on the back was thrown from the bike onto the road, where the truck ran him over,” Sub Lt Roonnaphum said.

“Mrs Namprik, who was the only one wearing a helmet, and her daughter received some scratches and bruising,” he added.

The truck driver, Suphat Pornjan, 26, was charged with reckless driving causing death.

There was no alcohol found in his system, Sub Lt Roonnaphum added.

As a father of a 5-year old myself I can't imagine the horror of something like this happening.

Yes, a real TRAGEDY!

Terrible news, but when will they learn children need protection as well ie put a crash helmet on the kids ,maybe in this instance it would not have made a difference RIP little boy

Yes, this I would call a tragedy, with in a thread like this a small giggle.gif . But the headline here is very basic and states the fact, no exaggeration to draw attention.

I guess the poor mother should get Jeeves to run him to school in the spare car next time then.

Some people just don't have a choice on how they transport there children. I'm glad she dosent have your sympathy I wouldn't want the sympathy of an arse hole either.

this is a response to a deleted post. Sums up what I thought about that insensitive poster.

Come on those in authority, show that you do care and take some positive steps to reign in this daily threat to life and limb before we see more tragedies.

RIP little one.

No one in authority is reading this.

RIP "Juggy".

Correct me if I am not mistaken. There were 4 people on 1 motorbike. The 5 year old on the back? While I realize this is common practice, where is common sense of the mother? You don't need a university degree or even high school to know riding like this is a serious risk to life and limb. Tragic accident but also contributory negligence by the mother. Will any of the adults on the bike learn from this experience and not overload in the future; probably not from what I have seen in this society.

Post #11 Yet another case of reckless, reasonless, driving by the cement truck guy. They don't learn from prior mistakes either. The term "retard driver" is used. If one were to measure/study the population applying medical standard criteria for intellectual impairment (retarded) they'd probably come up with some shockingly unsurprising results.

one on a bike or ten..irrelevant when you get hit by a truck. Could be ten people walking down the road and a trucks hits them. The truck driver is the issue nothing else.

Something I've learned here that really goes against all I've learned in the west:
The bigger the vehicle, the more "right of way" they have.
I once pulled in front of a bus and my wife screamed at me. What are you doing? He'll run over you without hesitation!

I said, no, I have the right of way here.
She said, maybe in your country but not here in Thailand.
The buses, lorries, cement trucks and big trucks have the right of way.
You can see it all the time at Chalong traffic circle.
Instead of getting mad about it, just remember it.
It may save your life.

Not saying it's right by any means.
But it is the unwritten law here.

Too bad about this 5 year old, Juggy, and this horrible story. RIP.

Firstly you are corrected, according to the OP there were 3 people on the bike. But more important, who cares, 3, 4 or more, it won't make any difference if a speeding cement truck hits you, see Mudcrab's post.

Tragedy that a child is dead. Headline for me is concrete mixer travelling at speed, how often do we see that on the roads. And hogging all the road as they speed along.

Anyone who has lived here for a while knew it was only a matter of time before we saw this headline. Those trucks are a real menace on the roads driven by retards.

You can't tell me that saving 10 minutes on their journey time by driving so recklessly will have any affect on any schedule, there is simply no excuse for their moronic behavior.

RIP little one.

So you know mum was doing everything correct and didn't ''not'' look before maneuvering and someone had a speed check gun to pronounce the truck was traveling at high speed. Everybody in LOS has no idea how to drive, what ever the vehicle.

RIP little one.

None more innocent in this world than a 5 year old child. Absolute tragedy.

Road death on Phuket is just about on a daily basis now. No end in sight.

Untrained, unskilled, and possibly unlicenced people incharge of a machine, that if not used properly, can kill many.

The roads here truly are the biggest risk to and individual's health and safety.

I can not begin the believe the pain being suffered by the family.

Agree, and the untrained, unskilled, unlicensed also applies to bike riders the length and breadth of LOS. sad.png

I see many people on bikes other than in Songkran, all without helmets, usually dad, mum and baby, sometimes an extra child. It is their only form of transport but I never see them speeding, they just amble along to get from point A to point B. This situation is prevalent in many areas. Here in Wangthonglang we see the Ital Thai subbies, rocketing past from the batching plant and usually care not too much about who is on the road. Most Thai's have spacial deficiency (every wondered why a Thai cannot work out the width of a vehicle or take a corner correctly?), they simply are unable to calculate it in their minds.  Thus they tend to get close to you when changing lanes from the right and the inverse when taking a left hand turn, they swing wide. Be aware of this and it may make sense to not go near them when you notice this pattern.

For this poor family a lesson of having a helmet on their child will mean nothing as each axle (set of wheels on standard cement mixers) is rated at 9 tonnes - 9,000kgs and front axles 6,000kgs. A 1-2kg head stands no chance if the vehicle is to run over anyone, child or otherwise. But despite the eye witnesses - indicating speed, there is usually two people who make up an accident. In this case speed perhaps mixed with the bike being too far out from the side of the road, driver with spacial ID problems and so on, perhaps the bike with no rear light (common) and 9:4pm at night. It is all just sad conjecture, a little boy is dead, so let's hope his next life and karma will have more merit than the one he just left.

"The boy, “Juggy”, was on a motorbike with his 35-year-old mother, Mrs Namprik, and his 3-year-old sister" Yeah. I skimmed and saw #juggy, # his mother, # a Mrs Namprik, and #3 year old.

I see now Mrs Namprick is his mother and not a separate person. Perhaps a conditioned response since so often there are 4 on a bike.

Okay, since you asked:

The boy, “Juggy”, was on a motorbike with his 35-year-old mother, Mrs Namprik, and his 3-year-old sister.

That would make it a mother and her two children, who are Burmese. They are lucky to have any transportation on this island, as there is no true public transportation available. I'm guessing you don't live here in Phuket as you'd have a bit of sympathy for the Burmese workers around. And you've probably never encountered these cement truck drivers who think they are F-1 drivers.

Well, the truck driver is the one charged, there must be a reason for that. And since he is driving a cement mixer it can't be because he has so much money, maybe because he is guilty of the indicated offences?

Migrant workers are mistreated and exploited everywhere in Thailand, not infrequently treated worse than animals. Truly awful. One case that highlighted the tip of the iceberg is the tortured Karen girl.
