Phuket Airport to get an overhaul to accommodate more travelers

BANGKOK, 12 March 2013 (NNT) – Airports of Thailand (AOT) is set to push ahead with an overhaul of Phuket International Airport to help it accommodate an expected surge in travelers’ number.

Acting AOT President Somchai Sawasdeepon said that there have been more and more air travelers passing through Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phuket Airport in recent times.

Mr. Somchai said it is estimated that the number of travelers to visit Phuket by air will rise to 10 million this year.

However, as Phuket International Airport can only handle 6.5 million passengers each year, there has been an urgent need for an improvement of the facilities.

The Acting AOT President stated that an overhaul to boost Phuket Airport’s capacity is now underway.

He added that the improvement is scheduled to be completed by May 3, after which the airport’s annual capacity will nearly double to 12.5 million.

There's still only one runway. What are these geniuses thinking?

It's more about passenger handling than aircraft capacity. Let's hope they deal with the car parking nightmare.

The new car park will be planned for opening in about 5 years.

I suppose it is a too logical solution to have a park and ride system in place where you park your vehicle in a secure car park and they bus you in from there.

Yes, that's too logical. Move along please.

I am intrigued to see what steps they will have taken to double the airport's capacity.

Of course, it was obvious all along: more taxis and minibuses.

Exactly! Although there is a thread about the airport try to acquire some land from the navy. I have seen a few drawing about a newer terminal that they think looks like an ocean wave. How many years have they been talking about upgrading HKT? Yet nothing is really being done. How can they say in the OP, that they want to double the airport's capacity without another runway and another terminal? Get real AOT!

Perhaps smaller chairs to sit in ???
