Leaders of the ethnic Naga people have complained about remarks by Deputy Minister of Immigration and Manpower Win Myint, who allegedly told Parliament last week that the group is one of the dozens of ethnic Chin tribes. During a press conference in Rangoon on Monday, Naga Student and Youth Association Chairman Naw Aung San said the minister should respect Naga identity and not confuse it with other tribes in western Burma. “Our people have their own literature and culture. This is our identity,†he said. “As Burma now has democracy, the government will have to give back our legacy.†Burma’s Naga number around 300,000. Another 2 million are living in eastern India.
