Burma government negotiators and Kachin rebels have agreed to hold further ceasefire talks on April 10. The agreement was reached at a meeting in Ruili, China on Tuesday, according to a joint statement, which said that the parties would seek to coordinate troop movements in Kachin State in order to prevent any skirmishes breaking out. The parties committed to “work till both sides reach the ceasefire based on mutual understanding, respect and trust for starting genuine political talks.†Fighting in Kachin has raged since June 2011, but has quieted down since Feb. 4, when both sides held a first round of talks.
