Hello

I have a good freind in thailand whos mum is from Cambodia and Dad from Laos but has lived in Buriylam all her life.

The situation is that she has no ID card and works/stays illeagaly in Thailand, thus meaning she can never get a proper job or leave the country and lives in constant fear of being deported.

Question is, how would one go about helping her out to get registered as a Thai or Laos or whatever?

Her parents wont help her and she doesnt even know how to help herself and is too scared to even talk about it to anybody in Thailand.

I know this is a tall order but can somebody give me some pointers on what I can do help help get her on track.

She doesnt want to and shouldnt have to sell her body forever, her father wont help as he probably thinks the money she sends him will stop if she gets herself an identity.

Any advice is much appreciated

I think the visa section will be more useful to you than this forum, there are some very informed people there who may have some suggestions for your friend.

good luck to her, Thailand does not give citizenship to people born inside Thailand whose parents are not Thai. :o

Dean. Best to read my post on "thai citizenship" thread. Although this is Isaan, not North, the same principles apply, but at least there is less discrimination than with Shan minorities. Check out the 2 NGO's I have highlighted as they particularly get involved where "working ladies" are involved due to inability to find legitimate employment in Thailand.

Thanks Dragonman!

I will read those links over -- it gives a good perspective on how things have developed into this mess...

As an aside, my GF''s ID card has passed muster with her ampur and now it is in "anomaat" status...

What is "anomaat" status? From what I gather from my conversations with my GF, anomaat status is when the ID application is waiting for "national" approval via the desk of some bureacrat(s) in BKK???

GF cannot predict when her application will be done with the anomaat phase. She says to be patient and wait and that it is likely to be slow with the current unrest around the upcoming election regarding Taksin's troubles... (What is it, is the whole government shut down? Can't get the paperwork pushed out? I wonder... ) Taksin has also insisted with his recent directives that no tea money be accepted to push along these applications as was commonly done in the past...

Although this is the LOS, there are a lot of people being pushed around with marginal rights. Not so cool in my book...

Thanks again, if anyone can shed some more light on what "anomaat" is, I would be thankful...

Cheers,

I've had an email back from a lady at the Mirror Art group just stating they have a team that works with Thai citizenship and she'll pass my details to them.

I've chased her but had no reply so far, will keep you all informed.

Dragonman I also emailed the people at the Karencenter but the email bounced back.

If i'm right in thinking, she'd have to return to Laos and apply to become a citizen there but as she doesnt exist in either country I cant see what difference it makes and she could just claim shes thai and her parents are Thai and are dead or missing or something?

Edited due to typos, again!

Not a good idea to leave Thailand. Just have to keep trying! Things work VERY slowly.

"Things work VERY slowly."

Dragonman is right on that! My GF (like many Thais) says "don't worry, jai yen yen, hai oton, etc." which for her seems natural and normal -- be patient... She is right, but there is the temptation to try to push to make it happen faster which is natural from our perspective...

We tend to think in terms of seconds, minutes, hours and days... Whereas the Thais think in terms of weeks, months and years...

Pretty wide spread on that. My GF say maybe this year, maybe next, but I find that time frame hard to practice... Life is short, na?

The lady in question has shit on me from a high height so I've obviously stopped my help with the ID card.

I did get somewhere with the Mirror Art group though, if anybody wants the contact i'll paste it below.

Hi deanjames,

Many thanks for the contact at Mirror Art Group. Is that an NGO or something else? Do they have a website?

Sorry to hear about the trouble that you have received from your friend. Perhaps she will see the light with time, or perhaps not... Good luck on that.

Time will tell with all these issues... You never know what is around the corner.

Chok dee na,
