[Myanmar] Burma Parliament Backs Review Of Constitution

Burma’s Lower House on Friday approved a motion to review the country’s controversial Constitution, state-run newspaper The New Light of Myanmar reports. Lawmaker of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party Aye Myint suggested in the motion that the Lower House and Union Parliament “form [a] committee and [a] commission comprising law experts and intellectuals to review the 2008 Constitution, so that it can be in conformity with … [the] reform process,†the paper reports. The step could have significant implications for Burmese politics as the military-drafted Constitution blocks opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from becoming president because her children hold a foreign nationality.
