Burma’s military and Kachin rebels reportedly clashed on March 13, a day after government peace negotiators and ethnic rebels held ceasefire talks in Ruili, China, Kachin News Group reports. The army’s Infantry Battalion No. 241 and Kachin Independence Army (KIA) special battalion No. 301 fought for two hours in Shan State’s Kuktai Township near Hu Hpyet town, according to an unnamed KIA officer. He claimed six Burmese soldiers were killed in the clash, adding that violence broke out because the army continues maneuvers in the area. The Kachin conflict has seen fierce fighting in recent months, but has quieted down since talks began on Feb. 4.
