Problems Opening Uk Based Website - Just Me?

Recommended Posts

Been trying to open this website for about two weeks:

http://www.redletterdays.co.uk/

After 30 odd seconds of trying to open, i get this message:

This webpage is not available

The connection to www.redletterdays.co.uk was interrupted.
Yesterday i was online to someone in the UK and asked them to try, and it opened first time for them. Any ideas what might be going on? Is it my computer, my network, the fact i am in Thailand? What?

No problems, opens right away. I am not in Thailand right now, but in the south American region.

Thanks for trying for me. Strange....

3BB Chiang Mai and it will not open for me. However if I enable my US VPN it does open.

What error message are you getting with 3BB?

Under Chrome - Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data.

Firefox (standard message when can not reach a site.)

The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.

If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.

If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

have yo tried using their site in France ???

www.frenchletterdays.com

Just tried it. It opens but the page it opens doesn't have anything to do with french letter days. Something about domain names.. 123.reg.co.uk.??

No problem here with True in BKK, but I'm using a VPN through OVH in France. Tried without the VPN and it times out in Firefox (connection was reset). Probably a local ISP routing issue.

Just for info... rechecked still able to access using op's link. Not using VPN or proxy. Ok with both FF and Iron (chrome).

No explanation but accessible for some in Thailand.

Working on Dtac 3G.

It almost seems like their hosting company is blocking certain Thai IP ranges.

Any half logical explanation as to why that might happen?

Opens fine for me with 3BB in Lamphun (using Firefox).

Not sure.

Seems to be gift vouchers, so not exactly a specialty business.

Some website owners block out ip ranges from certain countries where they will not get any business from anyway.

China and Russia springs to mind as a lot of hacking, spamming and ddos attacks originate from there.

It's very possible somewhere some Thai IP ranges got included.

It came in pretty smart using Dtac, so they don't seem to have server issues.

Another possibilty mentioned before is routing issues here in Thailand, or badly configured censoring proxy servers.

I do noticed some blocked websites are not redirected to the "blocked by police order" page, but simply time out.

Guess the above two scenarios are pretty much the only possible ones, as some Thai Isp's load the site, some don't, and through a (Western) vpn it always load...

I just remote accessed my computer at Chiang Mai university, which uses Uninet, and it also can not open the site and times out. Says connected to it but no data returned.

“Multiple subsea cable cuts have been confirmed off the northern coast

of Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea, which are impacting a number of cable

systems in Africa, Middle East and Asia connecting to Europe,” Seacom

Not likely the issue as this just happened and the OP has the problem for 2 weeks.

In Bangkok on True DOCSIS (cable). With the True proxy turned on, the site will not open. With the True proxy turned off the site opens.

How easy is it to turn the poxy proxy thing off? I'm using True wireless.

You would have had to manually setup/enter the proxy settings. Based on your question I seriously doubt you have the proxy settings even entered so there is no proxy to turn off or on.

I believe that there have been some intermittent routing issues between Thailand and the UK recently.

A few days ago a hosted server in the uk stopped responding to a clients inhouse server in Thailand.

On investigation, I found the following.

Thai server could not connect to uk server.

Uk server could not connect to thai server.

Other uk servers in the same datacenter (rackspace) could not connect to the thai server.

Other uk servers in different datacenters (amazon) could connect to both servers.

Other global servers in different datacenters (amazon) could connect to both servers.

Local machines in thailand could connect to both servers.

No firewalls at either end causing the issues.

Issues were not specific to a pair of machines but at least 1 machine and (presumably) port of one or more datacenters.

An hour or so later just started working with nothing changing at either end.

All of which seems to suggest a routing issue somewhere along the way.

Back to the site in the OP.

I can't access it on CAT, True or Kirz.

But downforeveryoneorjustme says it is up.

Traceroute from my server that was affected says they are 3.6ms and 15 hops away from each other.
