Hi, welcome to Bangkok, and to the forum. I hope you like Bangkok and everything goes well for you.

I hope you meet lots of other Filipinas/ Filipinos. Aren't there any in the Phillipines?

So, why are you here? I hope you're not a teacher.

You'll find a lot of filipino and filipina in the Catholic churches in Bangkok - most of them seem to be teachers of English, although many can't speak proper English themselves.

Hear hear!.....I agree with you. I used to have a filipino teacher for my english class at St. John, what can I say she was so terrible in english....and gladly to say she didn't even last it there more than a year!

I disagree. I know quite a few Thai people who speak English better than Filipinos. In fact 2 recent trips to China showed me that you are more likely to find someone who can understand English in Bangkok than in Beijing or even Hong Kong!

And what is a pilipino??? Half Filipino and half Polo mint?

I don't know where you're meeting Thais who speak English better than Filipinos. After working in the PI for years, and now here in BKK for 7 months, I can tell you there's no comparison. Thais seem to have tremendous trouble speaking English, as much as Koreans. Even service industry Thais who are in daily contact with foreigners speak very minimal English. I've only come across a couple Thais who can really communicate at all in English.

I have met quite a few Filipinos during my time Bangkok. As has already been stated most appear to be English teachers or musicians.

There are probably a lot more Filipinos in Bkk than what we think as it is difficult to distinguish a Filipino from a Thai just going by appearance. It's only once Filipinos open their mouth that their distinctive Filipino accent gives their nationality away.

Generally I've found the Filipinos that I've met in Bangkok to be decent, friendly people. I just wish that when there is a bit of silence in the room that they wouldn't sing or hum randomly for no reason. HeHe! :o

So what brings you to BKK, Ms. Pinay? Are you here working or on a long holiday?

I too have heard quite a few really good Filipino bands in BKK. They know their stuff.

Most answers are off topic, so will add my 2 cents worth along with Welcome to Ms. FilipinaBKK. Hope she enjoys her stay in Thailand and chaotic BKK. I've worked with lots of filipinas and have several filipina friends. All of them speak with an accent, but all speak excellent english.

I'm also curious as to what brings you to Thailand.

I've only come across a couple Thais who can really communicate at all in English.

I can hardly believe this statement.

More people in BKK understand english than you think. That also means there are more people in BKK that speak it fluently......and even the average person speaks a little english. Maybe just not to your expectations.

I've met lots of thais who speak excellent english. There are quite a number of thais in BKK who were educated overseas. Some of them starting with grade school all the way through college. However, I am continually surprised at the level of english of the average person in BKK. Way better than my thai, that's for sure.

And as far as filipinas/filipinos, you have to remember, that until not very long ago. there was a strong American presence in the PI. Besides having jobs on the base Filippinos were also the only foreigners (not naturalized) allowed to join the U.S. military. That created a great incentive to learn english.

If you have only met a couple of thais that speak fluent english in your time here, I'm wondering what kind of places you frequent.

I knew I would take flak for my probably unfair comment. It's just my opinion. I'm not meeting any politicians or rich people, I'm sure their English is good. But since i'm studying Thai i'm enjoying many short conversations daily with all kinds of people. They don't understand my Thai, but that's another thread :o

I said that Thais can't *speak* English and I stand by that. Also, my standards may be a little higher than some. Some people can order a beer in a foreign language and will tell you they are "fluent" in the language. I'm not impressed at all with English abilities in the people I meet, with exceptions. There was a girl in a Nokia store who could speak, then a guy in Starbucks, and an Isaan girl in a beer bar who spoke amazing English. That's about it. Maybe there's a lesson to be learned there: you have go live in the foreign country for an extended period of time to make progress in the language?

Beachbunny, you really shouldn't make nasty comments about places people frequent. If you disagree, that's fine. Don't get personal with people.

You are making a MASSIVE generalisation here, and even your own post calls yourself out on that; if you spent ANY time in market areas, with students or in nice hotels I think you would be very hard pressed to make a comparison with Korean level of english.

Thais can't speak english?! That is pretty insulting to me. Most Thais? Many Thais? Or Thais in general speak poor english...ok, all debatable but probably fair comment...but Thais can't speak English? Come on......

I suggest you consider rephrasing your comment; as for Thai people not understanding you at AUA, well let us know what you are trying to say in the language forum, and we might be able to help you out. However, I won't be so arrogant as to say 'foreigners can't speak Thai' :D

i agree on this most thais cannot speak much english at all and its gets worse every 1 km from chit lom

if there are a large number of english speaking and thais who can understand spoken english then id rarely have issues everytime i go shopping, use a resturant, fast food, buses, taxis, talk with most staff in my university (high education) and when trying to meet people to make friend who can barly say hello regardless of the fact they have PhDs and work for multi national banks

in addition i work in a thai university an my students who are studying an english program IT masters course have trouble with spoken english.

so who ever said thais have a high level of english knowledge is clearly wrong.

What's the difference? A lot of the Farangs are alcoholic and can't teach.
