Yeah sure. And in Germany, drinking of beer will be banned.

They Banned Drinking or selling alcohol in spots where water is thrown & now they banned throwing the water from the trucks too.

How is anybody going to know where the designated areas are located??

Has anyone here ever seen or heard of a motorbike having an accident while getting water dumped on them from a pickup? All the ones i know of were drunks on bikes running off the road at night...

I have heard of serious accidents on motor bikes at high speeds on highways by people throwing buckets of cold water at them.

Hitting a motor bike at high speed with a bucket of water on a highway. Give that man a teddy bear, bloody good shot. In Chiangmai the bikes are crawling along at walking pace through the traffic, it is even hard to walk at a decent pace through the gridlock.

Let me put it to you this way. If you hit me with water whilst I am on my bike you had better hope I don't get up because if you did then you will find out what it feels like to be hit by a bike. Really I have read some stupid things on here but that question is in the top 5 of the most stupid questions. wai.gifcoffee1.gif

So let me see if I get this straight.

1 They extend the holiday.

2 They then declare "dry" zones

3 They then declare no chucking water from vehicles.

Er stupid question, but what was the point of extending the holiday?

A Paramedic who has worked during the festival for a few years could probably give you a hundred examples. I for one would be happy if they would just stopped throwing ICE water on me. So for the last few years I only venture out by car and drive extra slow and careful around the merry makers.

A few years back. A guy near us broke his arm falling of his motor bike trying to avoid the idiots throwing water. Last year a guy going to a funeral was killed after he complained to the drunk who wet him. I think that was in Surat Thani.

If you want to play silly water games, that's fine, perhaps a large Red Sticker should be available for those that do not want to be assaulted every time they show themselves to these lunatics, who find it hard to grow up!

You don't seem to get it----It is the massive deaths that occur through things getting more out of hand, critic of the deaths is healthy, Reading between the lines and not just reading what is being said, would be good thinking.

Very few want the festival stopping, just moderating to how it used to be.

In the UK we did it controlling bonfires and fireworks to more controlled Nov 5, it saved lives, we made it a town bonfire with safety in mind. but alas we cannot expect Thailand to be the same. just a little genuine government control, for all to enjoy.

When someone gets you in the eyes while you riding a bike, so you come off the bike, and spend the next 2-3 weeks looking like a mummy, you might change your opinion on the matter

For some of us, all of these DO THIS, DON'T DO THAT regulations are not needed coz we use COMMON SENSE to determine what is right and what is not.

If I was armed with a water gun searching for a person to soak, I would only pull the trigger after I had established IMPLIED or EXPRESSED CONSENT from that person for me to do so.

How does one establish IMPLIED CONSENT, you may ask. Well, if you can't figure it out on your own , then you are one of those who lacks such COMMON SENSE.

And it is for those who lack such COMMON SENSE that a whole bunch of DO THIS, DON'T DO THAT regulations are required

Come to Pattaya during Songkran and educate all the retards what is common sense, doubt you will succeed but love to watch you try.

This retards NOT only NOT use common sense but any sense at all, as last year some brainiacs also thought it was fun to splash my pitbul in the face.

I have promised myself, this year i will not hold her and will let her free( i realize of the consequences) but what kind of retard sprays a dog and rider in the face while both on the bike?!blink.png

Water play should be limited to certain area's so people who wish to participate can and those who do not , do not need to suffer

Man oh Man.. what's next? Are they going to announce no drinking over Songkran? or say you have to wear helmuts when riding a motorcycle? or no coyote girls allowed to dance at temples? or Russians not working in Phuket tourist venues without a work permit? What's going on here? Is the govt. trying to outlaw all fun in Thailand? coffee1.gif sorry, not enough coffee yet this morning.

It is quite incredible that time was even wasted and this was debated in the first place. As if ANYONE in Thailand will abide by this.

Didn't they also ban the high powered water canons? cheesy.gif That worked out well.

I believe a few were confiscated by police last year, while the sellers kept on walking around selling new ones

Could be all moot anyway. Other paper in the week ahead says cabinet will meet in a special session tomorrow to discuss a total ban on driving during the holidays. Idea of YS.

Warm up for April 1?

I think the throwing of water at motor bikes on high speed roads should be banned in all of Thailand.

Some years back I was riding my bike into town, just prior to Songkran,so I thought it was safe... suddenly out of no where a guy throws a buck of water directly into my face, I damn near crashed, I stopped, looked back and saw a farang and his Thai-tart grinning from ear to ear. I was so pissed that I drove back, got off my bike walked up to the guy and grabbed the pale out of his hand and smashed him up-side the head, while he was apologizing profusely I scolded the xxxx out of his girlfriend in Thai.

Since then I stay home during Songkran, drink Ya Dong and frown. wacko.png

Oh how I wish I could do that, but a kindy kid with one hand tied behind his back could pound me, so I tend to avoid confrontation, and these days avoid all Thai festivals, as up here in the wild and lawless north, the drunk Thai kids like to throw very large and very dangerous fireworks at people on any possible occasion, even Loy Krathong.

I have been told that there are no words for "common sense" or " logic" in the Thai language......nor do the concepts exist.

Look at the way they drive. It's more important to pass as many vehicles as possible, no matter how dangerous , than to get to your destination...why worry about causing injury or death to others???

This is Thailand.

Safety is not an issue!..

.Don't think..

.Just smile!

I think this might be the least of any potential problems!! Late on Thursday (28th March) night a tanker was seen to be discharging its contents collected from septic tanks etc directly into the moat. So staying away from the centre of Chiang Mai and the Thapae Gate area to avoid being soaked by people refilling their buckets from the moat is probably a good idea.

Wish there were thousands like you around at Songkran---too many ting tongs around, good for you

This is why I tend not to target farangs XD They no understand.

Realistically, it's a fun thing especially during this heat, HOWEVER, there are certain places where the line needs to be drawn, for example:

• no huge splashes for speeding vehicles

• no ice cubes ... that's just stupid

• no smearing that shitty paste in eyes and nostrils

• no spraying of cyclists in the face

• no targeting of food stalls

• no targeting of pregnant women

• no targeting of senior citizens

• no targeting of people in expensive-looking clothes

The list can go on. However, Thais just don't get it. It's not their fault either -- drunk with joy and ignorance. There's just absolutely NO campaign on spreading awareness of the dangers of being trigger happy. Not at all. It's all DONT DO THIS... instead of "If you do this... THIS will happen." The government just doesn't give a shit. They just want to pwn over the people.

This used to be a tradition in the Philippines during "San Juan" day (St. John's day) until irate people started shooting the revelers with REAL guns.

I think the same will start to happen here in Thailand.

Then it'll be back to the boring old temple tradition : )

thats the koh pha ngan way , 3 day songkran after the first day all is over ,, too many fights and stabbings ,shootings and so on

Another genuinely great idea that would certainly reduce the road toll, especially more minor injuries caused by bikes sliding off the wet slippery roads. They get very wet, especially during the dry season with the build-up of sludge on the roads. Water play should b restricted to walking-only areas or private residences. The problem will be giving it over to provincial govenors - will they have the will to enforce it? It will certainly stop some of the horrendous traffic congestion in many of the towns here. Took me over an hour to travel a few hundred meters through a water celebration once...let's see how this pans out.

The thing that bothers the farangs who leave thailand in droves during Songkran is the stupid and unsafe practice of throwing/spraying of motorbikes on the roads with water.I can not understand why the Thai government is more concerned with making non-drinking areas which does nothing to prevent accidents and fights from motorbike drivers who do not want to get wet, much less have an accident. I have experienced some moron who causes a motorbike accident with some sort of water and then the coward who threw the water and cause the accident run away. The problem is many motorbikes are traveling at a speed that when surprised by a blind sided berage of water and loose control of their motorbikes. It is sad to say that most of the problems with this is caused by farangs out of control with water. The other is each provence is given a day for Songkran but in Pattaya it is a week and 1/2 of pure bull. If Pattaya stuck to two maybe three days it would be much better. The water deluge is supposed to stop at darkness, but it does not. People want to go out at night and are dressed for the most part in nice evening clothes. The last thing I want to do is go on my motorcycle to meet friends and get hit with buckets of water at night, for a week and 1/2. Ask yourself do you want to walk/sit for hours with wet clothes and underwear while you eat food and go have drinks with friends? This is a problem that the government and or police have let get out of control. these two agencies are desinged to protect people and the do not enforce safety. The Thai government does loose tourist baht when we all leave for a week. Do you really thing the goverment is making money from the morons buying 6 packs from 7-11 while the hotels are at less than capacity and any farang left here is shut in their domicile?
