BMA warns city residents against dengue risk and outbreak

BANGKOK, 29 March 2013 (NNT) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is warning the city residents to beware of possible dengue outbreak and to exterminate all mosquito-breeding sites around them.

The BMA’s Health Department Director Dr. Wantanee Wattana revealed on Thursday that there continue to be more dengue patients in Bangkok lately.

Dr. Wantanee said, between December 30, 2012 and March 23, 2013, a total of 2,622 people were diagnosed with dengue virus, with one killed by it. She stated that the latest statistics are 3 times higher than the past 5 years’ average.

Meanwhile, the department’s Disease Control Division Director Dr. Wongwat Liulak said the city residents should make sure their neighborhoods are clean and free of mosquito-breeding sites while watching out for new patients.

Dr. Wongwat stated that anyone found suffering high fever for 2 consecutive days or suspected to be infected with dengue virus must immediately be brought to receive medical attention.

He added that local health office or the BMA hotline 1555 must also promptly be informed of the situation so that an extermination team can be sent in to rid the area of dengue risk.

We have had the same problem in Nongprue near Pattaya. We called in the Public Health office down at the City Hall; their reply was "no budget" to smoke the area. After having had three out of four possible Dengue fever types I can tell you, that you might have to resort to private solutions. We've fixed it with a pest control company which came around the next day for little money and we have not had a single incident since.
So, maybe knocking on the door of the Ministry of Public Health would be a nice idea. If everybody calls them and asked what they do about it then maybe.......

Silly me, I am dreaming. They're busy planning for Songkran, stock on booze prior to the ban, getting a mini van as splashing water from pick-ups is prohibited.......

and i tought the disguesting diesel fumes in bangkok killed most of the mozzies, lol

can you count on your neighbours to do their civic duties as : empty/ check containers near their house which are breeding grounds ?

they don't even care that their dogs shit the place all over , put litter everywhere, while there is a bin nearby

so.... guess it up to ourselves to put the needed deed or sprays to protect oneselves and our families

Exactly...hoping that the residents of the city will do anything is completely ridiculous. There's no enforcement and no-one cares.

Near where I live there's a disused rooftop swimming pool. Every time it rains it fills, providing a huge area of still water that must be producing thousands of mosquitoes per day. It's standing long enough for plants to grow on it, too - it takes many weeks to evaporate after heavy rain. They NEVER cover it, and they never treat it.

Is there a place to report this? Would any action be taken?
