BANGKOK, April 3 - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Tuesday received a "Woman of the Year" award for her role in supporting the empowerment of women in the society.

Government spokesperson Tossaporn Serirak said the Association for the Promotion of the Status of Women under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Soamsawali has awarded the "Woman of the Year 2013" to the prime minister on occasion of International Women's Day which falls on March 8 every year.

Association President Pensri Bhijaisanit presented the award to Ms Yingluck today at Government House.

The "Woman of the Year" award is presented to those who are committed to support the development of the roles of Thai women, both at policy and implementation levels.

Association president said Ms Yingluck was chosen woman of the year as she initiated the Thai Women’s Empowerment Funds and the Centre to Eliminate Violence against Women.

She also encouraged more women's engagement in politics.

Ms Yingluck thanked the association for the award and reaffirmed that the women’s empowerment funds will efficiently prepare Thai women to be ready for the ASEAN Community.

She reasserted that she will promote more women's participation in the country's development and that she will accelerate consideration of the bill aimed at increasing female proportion in local politics.

On the same occasion, the association also named former ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan as the "Man of the Year 2013". (MCOT online news)

In terms of TL,

I have to agree.

She could have easily buckled from the pressure and scrutiny

But hasn't. In fact she seems to be fighting back a bit.

The degree of her independence can be questioned

but she's stood up to the pressure of the job so far.

Ok, what exactly did she do for women. ZhouZhou please give me the complete rundown and not the fact she was selected as PM that was a setup from day one

She supposedly set up the womens' fund to the tune of several Billion baht....gave the overall management to a family associate (Nalini or similar I think) and nothing has been heard of since...not that I have seen in the media anyways.

I would envisage that these funds have long gone by now

Those that oppose the P.M recieving this award have not nominated another woman who has achieved more in Thailand in the last 12 months.

As any other woman in Thailand has achieved more it was difficult to pick just one.

What a surprise. Mouthing platitudes earns you a meaningless award, worth slightly more than an honorary degree from an obscure kiwi university that appears to know SFA about Thai politics.

Last I heard, the WEF was being used as a pay-off to cronies and political camp followers, there doesn't seem to be any decrease in violence against women, and the highly announced STOP CORRUPTION is a facade to hide the new depths being plumbed.

But there is good news, the PM managed an hour or so in parliament last week. Not likely to be the start of a trend though.

Just as an aside. I studied at that university in Auckland and can assure you that most that go there do NOT consider it a real university. It is more like the the TAFE colleges in Oz.

I will nominate my GF

She has a full time job - PM has a full time job

but my GF actually goes to work everyday - can we say the same as PM?

We're only a quarter of the way through 2013 and they announce the winners already!

Or perhaps the results were known in advance? whistling.gif

Ever think incentive?

Stood up to the pressure? Well I guess you would be pressured if you spent at least one day in a parliament session rather than shopping in France and other such countries.

deserved.

haters gonna hate

We don't hate her, we hate her brother and what they stand for. The fact that she never goes to work except when there is shopping to do, or to hand out tablets, is another thing entirely.
