Harsh but realistic. I thought the vet was only refusing because of the Buddhist teaching, however yesterday I discussed the question with a (Buddhist) Thai pet-owner and she responded that Buddha's teachings are not always the most relevant reason for a vet to refuse but it seems that it is forbidden by law and when he / she wants to help to end the irreversable suffering of an animal he risks somebodies charge with the risk to loose his / her license.

I know she is very good-hearted for animals, Buddhist, but she is realistic enough to see the limit. Once she had to live some days at her home with an old suffering and dying dog, where even the dog didn't want to continue it's live anymore as she saw and felt.

I don't know if this law is an excisting one.

I have never heard of such a law.

I know for a fact that Thai vets do sometimes euthanize but not all of them and their threshold for doing so it high i.e. they personally have to be convinced that the animal is suffering terribly with no hope and no way to alleviate the suffering.

Ask about possible pain killers like a fentanyl patch to keep your animal comfortable as an alternative. (May need to do so at a high-end vet)

I'l try to investigate more Sheryl. Might be it was just a low excuse by her vet. That dog was really suffering and investigated by him. What I'll do, having contacts with very good vets in Catalonia (North Spain) who are helping neutering / spaying stray cats, ask them a way to give me a proper hint how to do in such a case.

I've never heard it is illegal either. And I have had a pet euthanized by a vet in Thailand ....but I must say they charged me MORE than a emergency vet clinic (which is generally more expensive than a regular day vet) would in Los Angeles, which isn't a cheap location.

However, that vet tends to specialize in farang clients, and charges like she was in located in NYC ...good for her I guess.

My next dog that needed to be euthanized, I did myself, for a cost of less than $1, and I have to say that it was the best, most peaceful, death of any pet I have ever seen ...and I have seen a lot as I used to work around this. This wouldn't apply to everyone though, obviously, my dog was pretty sick, a few months short of 19 years old, and just needed a bit of drugs of send her over. I wouldn't suggest most people try this on their own. (Oh, and certainly NOT if you have no idea what you are doing ... I knew, for example, that my dog's kidneys were shot as well as having access to appropriate drugs to do the job.) And mentally one might not be prepared to do this, depending on you, your experience with pet deaths, etc.

But anyway, Sheryl, if you are still reading this, do vets actually have access to pain killer type drugs like you suggest? I have had NO pain killers given to my pets, for various serious things, like cancer! It has been horrible, with vets offering me things like aspirin, which mostly causes a lot of stomach upset in dogs, and is obviously, not effective for serious pain. Vets have been a huge disappointment in this country, for the most part, although I can appreciate the reasons for this (or the reasons I think they have to be the way they are ...other than the lack of providing euthanaisa, and the lack of pain killers ...I really can't see a good reason for that.)

Anyway, to the OP, depending on where you are located, there is probably some vet who will do it for you, you just have to find THAT vet. People in your location might know?

I'm sorry your pet is so sick and that you have to deal with this, it is always so sad and tragic, and the average person won't be very supportive ...however people on this website, seem to be supportive and will offer nice messages usually ...unlike most other subjects!

If you are in Chiang Mai I can help with a vet. Good luck and so sorry ..I have always found it so distressing to have to choose the time my animals will die. But having to wait for nature to take it course is much worse, in many cases ...in fact, I have yet to be able to make it to that time, but did try a few times, and regret waiting so long.

Thanks for your tribute amykat! I have had lots of animals before in North Spain from (stray) cats and dogs to some (mini) horses, even some coatis and more and we had always a very good attention from the (local) vets for our own animals as for the strays in and around the village.

It's always a very difficult decission when one has to decide to end the live of your own suffering animal.

Here a lot of people are a much more superfacial what that is concerning.

I still hope to get once a (personal) message with a recommendation in BKK.

And: "however people on this website, seem to be supportive and will offer nice messages usually ...unlike most other subjects!": that's why I decided to visit only this community-forum and no others anymore, but it seems to be a point in most other forums than TV as well.

Not to go off topic but there are actually many pleasant and helpful forums on TV. I agree that the tone in the General Forum and many of the community ones is not everyone's cup of tea but if you stick to the specialized forums you'll find lots of pleasant and helpful comments. I have gotten a lot of expert assistance for home repairs on the do-it-yourself forum, advice on car problems and help with navigation routes on the motoring forum, and tons of help with computer issues on the computer forum, for example.
