ELECTRICITY
Energy crisis has passed: Egat

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Thailand has escaped a possible energy crisis, thanks to the national energy-saving campaign and lower-than-expected temperature, according to Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat).

Power blackout or brownout in some areas of Thailand were anticipated as Total Exploration and Production Myanmar, the operator of Yadana gas field in Myanmar, shut down the field for maintenance on April 5. This resulted in the disruption of the supply of 1,100 million cubic feet of natural gas per day during the maintenance period.

According to PTT, tasked to be in charge of natural gas procurement for electricity generating, the supply resumed late April 12, 30 hours before schedule.

EGAT Governor Sutas Patamasiriwat announced yesterday that during the April 5-12 period, there was no power blackout or brownout. Since April 12, combined cycle power plants have been switched from diesel and bunker oil to natural gas. During the 8-day period, 86.22 million litres of bunker oil and 38.80 million litres of diesel were consumed in lieu of natural gas, 5.8 million and 11.2 million litres below expectation, respectively.

During the period, power consumption peaked at 24,955 megawatt when mercury hit 37.5 degree Celcius and 25,226MW when temperature was 38 degree.

"The energy crisis has passed peacefully, thanks to the collaboration from the public and private sectors as well as the general public and media. Yet, we still need to proceed with the saving awareness, which will not only help the nation but also save their power bills," he said.

The electricity situation during the eight-day maintenance went smoothly without any power outages,

Really ?

So the 3 different days of 2 hours each time with No power had nothing to do with this ??

Power situation returns to normalcy

BANGKOK, 15 April 2013 (NNT) – The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has reported that the power situation in Thailand is normal despite the temporary suspension of gas supply by Myanmar, thanks to efforts from all sectors to help saving energy.

According to EGAT, the gas supply delivery from Myanmar to Thailand was halted for 8 days, from April 5-12.

During the supply cutoff, Thailand’s combined cycle power plants were shifted from natural gas to bunker oil and diesel. During the eight-day period, 86.22 million liters of bunker oil and 38.80 million liters of diesel were consumed. Since April 12 the power plants have been switched back to natural gas.

According to EGAT, there was no power blackout or brownout during the April 5-12 period thanks to the collaboration from all sides as well as the lower-than-average temperature predicted.

I wonder what normal consumption is during the year on similar days. The numbers are largely pointless to report unless you know what they normally are. I'd be curious to know if there was any significant reduction in power consumption during this time.

Funny how there is no thanks to Myanmar for carrying out it's necessary routine maintenance in a timely efficient manner finishing well ahead of schedule!

It seems that Thailands total reliance on Myanmar for energy generation puts the country at huge risk particularly when loose handgrenades like Chalerm take every opportunity to piss off the Myanmar Government. Thailand needs to be careful supplies between Governments are never gauranteed contracts or not!
