Congrats. Looks like your hard work paid off. What foods do you avoid? What exercise equipment do you use the most?

Posted

Actually during the weight loss part I used my rowing machine most but i kept doing all the normal exercises bench press / squat / deadlifts and others.

Mostly i avoid rice and Thai street food.. i cook my food myself and keep it a bit low but not super low in carbs. Basically I eat a lot of unprocessed foods, oatmeal / non flavored yogurt and beef (minced and grilled) and chicken plus frozen vegetables.

I have mostly cut out sugar and I don't drink anymore.

I do believe the best results are there when you combine exercise with a diet, and i believe that its better to do something you like exercise wise (though i did what i thought is most effective) and keep it up. Weight loss is a long time game and requires a change in lifestyle it wont suffice to loose it and go back to old habits as that will bring the fat back.

For me what worked was weight training / rowing as cardio and a lot of patience.

To elaborate a bit more on this, I feel that there is a right way to do it and it might not be the same for everyone. I am a firm believer in consistancy, its better to do something slow but keeping it up then going all out and giving up half way. So find some exercise that suits you.

I have always been exercising and always had a home gym in Thailand, I did improve on it a bit last year and this year. The addition of a concept 2 model D rower really did help me burn calories. But even when i was at heavier weights i would still do around 4 sessions with weights a week. Hard sessions as i never minded sweating. However i feel that, taking control of my diet, helped me more as exercising.

Weight lifting is great to hold onto muscle during a diet as its not about loosing weight but about loosing fat. If the weight you lost is muscle you still did not win a thing. When i was fed up with myself I cut out alcohol completely and started to count the calories i consumed. Later i added the 10km rows (i build up to that) after i bought the rowing machine.

You can do a lot in a year but it all depends on your own choices, if you think that beer is more important then your weight then you will never succeed. There is no real easy way for most it does mean a radical change of what they eat.

J sixpack will come in and tell us its all about low carb and how you can eat what you want then. For me that did not work, however as i want to go to the next level I will try 2-3 weeks of almost zero carbs. If he is right i wont feel hungry, I did try it before and it never really worked for me but just trying it again for a short period is ok with me.

Maximize your hormones no sugar in the morning as testosterone is mainly produced from around 8 to 10 am this is also the best time to lift as the most T. Insulin interfers with T production any supplaments that enhance hormone production should be taken before 8am

Congratulations. Looking great!

He looks a bit bigger face to face than he does in the photos too.

That is the problem with pictures.. always had that problem.. im not good at posing. biggrin.png

That would be tough for me as I normally get out of bed in the afternoon.

I imagine, living in a place like Pattaya, I'm not the only bodybuilder who does.

I disagree that first thing in the morning is the best time to train. You can make it work training anytime of the day or night, but the problem with training first thing is that the body is still stiff, cool and more prone to injury. Anyone who has lower back pain will tell you how much worse it is in the morning. Assuming you wake up in the morning, mid-afternoon is probably the best time.

(I'm referring to weight training, not cardio)

... however, ultimately there's many factors, and convenience is the number one factor. As Rob said, consistency is most important, so it stands to reason you have to train when it best suits your daily schedule.

Shave the body, add some posing oil, deepen the tan, improve the lighting a bit, contract the abs, and you'd be scary.clap2.gif clap2.gifclap2.gif

Well done!

You're still 38? I thought you were 38 last January? What's your secret?biggrin.png Imagine what you're going to look like in 15 years time when you reach my age.

These threads are motivational even for people like myself who are always at it. It can be a lonely road and it's great to stay in touch with other motivated people. It's a shame you don't live in Pattaya so we could have some training sessions together.

I agree with you that consistency is the biggest hurdle. Too many start too hard and burn themselves out, or injure themselves in the process and quit.

I was down at Tony's after Songkran last night - about 8pm - there were 3 people at the gym - I've never seen it so quiet. All 3 guys were in great shape. A Russian guy there made a comment to me.... "you don't take time off to celebrate?". I hadn't even given it a second thought, but with Tony's being open everyday of the year, if it is my training day, unless I'm ill I'll be there.

At the end of the day, you cannot get into good shape without sacrifice. If it was easy everyone would be in great shape.

@tropo.. your right about the age.. im 39 i forgot about it (seriously).

Yes Tropo, i think consistency really is important as most of us have breaks or down time and then we have to get back to where we were. The more you can minimize that the better it will be in the end. That is why i said find things you like to do, sure i go for effective but it still has to be something you can keep doing.

As for me getting bigger.. im already bigger as in these pictures.. and not sure what i will do as there is a limit to where I want to go muscle wise. On the other hand I like working out and if i touch the weights in general i will keep growing.. unless i limit my food intake. Anyway I will see and you are not the only one who said something about the tan.

Yes you are right end of the day you need to give up on something and do some other things else you cant get in shape.

About tanning. I decided today to get my tan sorted. My front and legs haven't seen the sun for years so I went down to the beach and did 20 minutes back and front and will continue this on my training off days until I'm evenly tanned. I don't really enjoy roasting in the sun but it will help with my vitamin D levels too as I'm quite a night owl and often don't see much daylight.

I'm not so sure that you're going to reach a limit on your muscle growth. When you get more you'll keep wanting more - it's addictive. Also, when you attain a more muscled physique you'll probably still feel undersized and want to grow more.

One thing about muscle, it's very easy to lose - unlike fat which takes a huge effort. If you ever wake up one day and look in mirror and think to yourself.... "<deleted>, I'm too big (muscular)"... you know what to do - take a few weeks off.biggrin.png

I always follow your posts and I think you are one of the TV pillars.

Posting your fotos on the internet shows real commitment and I appreciate this.

Otherwise, I'm not that good in judging males by them looks... So I asked the wife...

And this is what she said after a short glance:

First picture - A woman hugging her "boy" standing in the ocean solid as a rock... and yes, that's the picture she liked most

Second picture - with the white fur in front of the picture, it looks like the dog took the foto...

Third picture - borderline anorexia athletica

after a brief moment, with lowered voice, she also mentioned, a guy losing that kind of weight would also suffer loss of circumference in the nether regions plus decreased libido.

Not kidding you, that's the verdict of a 20+ years fulltime nurse looking at your pics for about 10 sec.

In the car on the way back from Robbloks place, I had my wife, and 2 other friends, a Thai couple. All the way back home, about a 40 minute drive, the 2 women were givings us lads so much earache for not looking the same. Neither of the 2 of us are fat, and as I've said earlier, Robblok looks more impressive in real life than in the photos. Next time I pop round for coffee, I'm leaving the woman behind.smile.png

My nether region is quite fine and I could loose a bit there might even be better. I can tell you one thing since loosing the weight performance in That area has only increased both in stamina and ease of getting hard. As Poanoi commented obesity can lead to erection problems and of course overweight men in general don't have much stamina. It is interesting comment about size there but i doubt there is any truth in there, just an Thai old wives tale as many others.

After reading some on the internet the general opinion is that you gain size on your penis after you loose weight not the other way around. It shrinks as you get fatter mainly because of less testosterone Dr Ozz and other say so.. anyway I don't believe either side and think the thing won't change it will look bigger of course on a lean guy.

It's hard to please everyone the comments are mixed of course but the most important part is I please myself. I have heard people say my muscles are scary, have had girls loving it. In general they like this new look a lot more then the old look.

I do like the claim om boderderline anorexia means im closer then i thought. Just a question are you overweight and might your misses have said something like this not to offend you, it is known to happen.

However it is, im happy and more healthy and that is the point and i posted this to show what was possible that you don't have to give up.

Naam i seen more older bodybuilders and they do impress me, much more if you compare them with the normal older guys. I believe in shape could help a lot with the quality of life especially when older.

Of course one would have to train differently, and i do realize that is not you as there are no scars there on the chest.

Excellent stuff robblok, and the best of it is that people will listen to you even more intently now as you have taken the step to show the results of your work.

I'm away to the gym biggrin.png

Mate ... great work.

I currently look like you in the opening shot ... I'm a bit more handosm of course ... all the girls tell me that ... w00t.gif ... but don't think that I can transform into the trimmed down Hulk like you have.

Well done on the transformation ... clap2.gif

@ theblether ... some extra chin-ups for me please ... there's a good chap.

David,

Everything is possible but as i stated before even in my overweight state i was still working out hard so it stands to reason there was some muscle under all that fat. So it was peeling of layers to get where i was. I also don't think getting that kind of muscle in a year while loosing weight is possible. (not bragging here). I believe i had a large part of these muscles already they just had to come fee.

The diet and the extra cardio is what brought it all out the weight lifting mostly helped with maintaining muscle (real important as you only want to loose fat).

I do believe there are many ways to get to a lower weight and what works for one does not always work for an other JT for instance is having great results with a cheap food supplement he is using. I tried the same stuff and it did not work for me, I have no reason to question JT his honestly so I do believe it works for some.

But in the end David, if you don't want to change you won't.

I was just fed up with myself i hated my round face and the start of a double chin.. did not like my picture to be taken ect ect. Maybe i was to self conscious but we all got points that we say this far and no further. But you should never do it for anyone but yourself and if your not behind it it will never work.

I will always be helping people though i might not believe in everything.

Great job.

Nothing to be shy about that's for sure.

Wish I could do the same thing myself, tad older than you though.

Like i said in my post i was motivated by a poster who is older then me in his 50ies and trains like crazy too. He showed me what was possible and made me review my points of view.

But even if you can't do the same thing you will be able to improve and that is what it is all about. That is if it ads quality to your life if not then better not.

One other thing that really got to me was looking at my mom and my dad, dad always biked a lot and did sports (unfortunately he is overweight more then me in that picture) but he has great stamina.. and can still do everything and has great quality of life where as my mom never did much sports and has loads of problems and gets tired easy. So i do believe staying active helps and how far you take it is up to you.

Problem with me is that any type of exercise for exercise sake, bores me to tears and I cannot keep doing it.

I need to lose a few kilos, just the belly and tone up, but dedicated exercise has never ever interested me and the times I have tried, I just could not continue as the boredom factor kicks in and I lose interest to do it.

I do want to though, but how is my sticky predicament.

Robblok. Do you work a full-time job in Thailand?

My biggest problem once I have gotten over the mind over matter bit is just getting the time to exercise.

Working 2 jobs etc but I'm finding 20 minutes or so each day on the cycling machine and another 20 minutes doing some basic light weight reps is working a bit.

by the way well done.

I had a friend that ripped up similar to your success in less than a year.

The following year he developed a tumor under his right nipple from the steroids.

5 years on he is a bloated 130kg mess with one tit.

How is your cardiovascular fitness???

Yes I do but from home and its more as full time, but i also got my gym at home so i win a lot of time by not having to travel.

I feel the same. So when I use the bike machine I watch an episode of a series on my tab with Bluetooth headphones. Same when doing light weight reps I listen to music. Headphones again as I don't want to upset the neighbors :D
