A Thai inventor has won prizes from an international inventions exhibition recently in Switzerland.

BANGKOK: - New Innovation of Early Detected Ischemic Stroke Device Reach to Community invented by Watchara Kaewmahanin, a lecturer at Biomedical Research Unit in Cardiovascular Sciences of Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at Naresuan University won a special prize on stage and Geneva bronze prize at the 41st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva.

Inventors from 45 countries across the world presented their inventions at the exhibition.

It was held between April 10-14 in Switzerland and Watchara was presented with the awards on April 12.

Previously, the device won the best invention award given at Inventor's Day, which is annual national event.

Ischemic stroke has killed and impaired many Thai people due to late detection of the disease, which can lead to damage in patients' brains.

The device can check constrictions of a patient's carotid artery, which carries blood to the brain. It can also evaluate risks of the disease, using the National Stroke Association Risk score, which is accepted internationally.

So, the Ischemic stroke risk evaluation and protection are conducted effectively, conveniently, quickly and cheaply. Its effectiveness and safety are equal to standard devices costing Bt2-3 million each that are used at big hospitals.

The innovation costs only Bt50,000-Bt70,000. It is light, portable and easy to use. It can evaluate and show the evaluation results quickly. Thus, the device helps ease a problem of medical specialist shortage as it shows the results that are easy to understand for medical workers at smaller hospitals. With the device, they can help people to a check at their home.

I hate to be a skeptic, but i dont think we will be seeing these in hospitals anytime soon. There is not much to skim off of 50-70k, its much easier to hid tea money in the 2-3 million baht devices

"Ischemic stroke has killed and impaired many Thai people due to late detection of the disease, which can lead to damage in patients' brains."

The stroke itself is not a 'disease', but the possible result of a disease, accident or unknown (30 - 40% !). Anyway as usual start with wiki ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ischemic_stroke#Ischemic )and follow the references or just yahoo/google a bit.

Always remember, you must be worth more alive than dead, or your significant other will not be interested in getting you and the new invention together.

congratulations!

so many good things coming out from Thailand, that is another thing to add to the list.

very good.

I suggest you hold off on the enthusiastic endorsement until such time as the device undergoes clinical trials and is shown to actually work.

Sadly for some people this device has come too late to detect the brain ischaemia,

which can lead to impaired reasoning and to obsession with "tea money".

even if it turns out that way you describe it is not bad.

research work is often dead end work without a final product. that is part of the process. in the next stage they will be better.

people use their creativity to do good things, research, make invention.

some just use their brain to bash other. not very good.

We'll have to see how this works out in trials but as others have said well done.

Are you suggesting moaning farangs are amongst the many good things coming out of Thailand?

You cannot even be positive about this young Thais invention not to mention anything else. You're just a moaning, and from your admission wealthy, clown frequently making inane comments.
