We have two border terriers and are moving to Thailand. We are getting bogged down in all the paperwork and various pet agents available. Has anyone recently transported their dogs from the Uk to Thailand who could recommend an agent or have managed to do without one. It appears one of the most costly parts is the need to pay a separate agent in Thailand, who sorts out the import licence and customs and excise and deals with all the paperwork and actually gets your pets out of the airport without all the hassle for a price!! We have been quoted £800 just to employ him, although have been told most of the cost is custom and excise duty. BA wont fly dogs without a pet agent. Thai airways will but say no terriers, which I find a bit bizzare, as ours are hardly a dangerous breed!

If the dogs travel with you than you do not need an agent in Thailand and can do it yourself, but if they travel by cargo you do need one.

For importing a pet into Thailand you need an import certificate. See:

When my daughter imported her dog in 2011, (also a small terrier type) the agency handling the UK side of things quoted 500 pounds for the Thai agent but payable direct to the UK agent who would then settle the bill with the Thai agent.

When my daughter said she would find her own Thai agent they tried to tell her that BA wouldn't ship her dog without an agent and that the DEFRA licence also required an agent, neither of which were true. BA just wanted a contact name and address, they didn't require the contact to be a registered agent of any sort.

The Thai agent charged around 12,000 baht including customs charges and import duty.

Regarding Thai not wanting to fly terriers, I dont think its about them being dangerous. Emirates also refused to fly our dog, they said it was because certain breeds didn't travel well and were susceptible to illness on-route.

flossiebear, have a look at the other current thread 'Do I need an agent to import my dog into Thailand'. You might find useful info on there. I've just recently been in touch with company mentioned above (Dynamic) and I've posted about it there.

Good luck, it's an arduous - and expensive - process, I'm still living it at the moment!

Hi,

I just came back from Italy with a new puppy. No problem at all.

Thai airways charges excess baggage fees if the dogs are traveling with you. Rate is $75US/kg which is 1 1/2 times the fee for excess luggage.

All you need is ti apply for an import permit: a week before. I would suggest to have a pet passport for each dog.

Your dogs need all current vaccinations more than 3 weeks prior to the trip. Rabies also. Microchip and just before leaving, an examination with a government approved veterinarian.

you also need copies of your passport and the numbers that will be issued byt the Thai government for the import permits.

If shipped as excess luggage: they will come out with the oversize items (near the veterinary inspection area).

On arrival you need to go to the Animal Quarantine with the dogs in their crates.

They will fill in the documents and charge you between 200-500 baht....depends who is there

After this you go through the section where you have goods to declare....costs another 1,000 baht per dog: they will ask for your passport there also.

Then you get out and go home: your dogs should be in quarantine at home....to your discretion.

As far as breed, I would put crossbred. To avoid the Staffordshire terrier label. Border terriers can be described as small crossbred. No offense just to simplify the process. It is not the airlines fault but lots of staff never handle the animal shipping process and you could have a zealous one to deal with...

As I say , my experience was painless. The pup was traveling in a small cat cage next to me inside the cabin (has to be less than 7 kg). Your border terriers will travel in the hold.

Last year I traveled to Canada and back with my other dog and it was a similar process.

Good luck.

Cargo is another matter and takes much longer to clear the dog through and more expensive too.

thank you to everyone for their help. I have had a nightmare with my computer so sorry for late reply. We are now considering flying dogs with Thai air on same flight.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but i'm looking for a XXL/Giant sized Dog crate to fly my Dog back to the UK. If anyone has a very large Dog Flight crate they want to get rid of, please let me know :)
