I came back to TH after a trip overseas and expected to pick up the F30, but not yet arrived.

The sales lady than made me buy the 520d instead. i haven't yet looked into chip tuning of this model though.

Is it the F10 LCI 2013? The engine should be exactly the same as the F30. That means no remapping available I guess..

Back in June/July when I went to pick up the F30, the 520d was sitting in the show room.

The sales lady must have been pretty sure she could make be buy it , because she said just hop in and drive it away , it is ready for you.

So I did.

I don't know how many versions of the 520d is out but it is a F10 model 2013.

The colour is white with brown interior.

In the beginning I thought it was too big and not so sporty as the 320, but after 5000 km in it I now feel ok about it.

It is not as sporty as the 320 though in handling, but power wise I do not feel the difference.

The LCI is not out yet in Thailand. Actually delivery starts around September/October 2013 in Europe. Its a beautiful car anyway.

Vramotors group in Bkk gave me following offer.

They say they produce their own software for the piggyback - price is 42.500 Bht installed

They claim also F30, E90,91 and 92 all use same software + they have done lots of them..

Anybody know this company ?

More power and less fuel consumption?

From my understanding chipping a BMW only give 10-15% more HP but always worse fuel consumption.

Prolly a faulty device which you should have claimed..

These Beemer folks seem to be quite satisfied..

One of my cars is the 2.0 D X3 , (same engine spec as 520D). Spent many years in the business and always used to recommnend, and still use myself to this day, PTronic piggy back boxes. Certainly not the cheapest but technically sound and never had any problems on many cars.

I used to own a Racechip Pro, or whatever it was called back then. The car went into limp mode a bunch of times. The power is nothing close to what is announced. It stopped working after a few months. Not worth it.

I didn't even bother. I went for a Bluefin, and what a smooth experience in comparison. The car felt like a 6'er 325d. Too bad its not available for the F30 yet. I'm not sure if I should go for a new F30 or maybe a 4-series..

All of the above mentioned piggy back devices (Race Chip,Vram Motors and P-Tronic) only increase the common rail pressure so effectively they are all very much the same - except for price.

There is a limit to how much extra common rail pressure should be applied via these plug in boxes - especially for road use where reliability is more important than outright power.

And having had two different piggy back devices including a race chip on my 320d, I guarantee you will not get anywhere near the hp and torque gains claimed. I have no dyno to prove that but I challenge anyone in Thailand to disprove it with a dyno run.

When challenged, some of these suppliers (and all the others - there are dozens of them) might reluctantly admit that the quoted figures are the maximum attainable. Others won't commit to an answer at all.

YOU WILL NOT GET THE HP/TORQUE claimed with a piggy back set up for road use - which is the setting it will come with! P-Tronic for example quotes a E90 320d (184hp) to go to 238hp. I'd like to see that just by increasing common rail pressure.

You will use more fuel however as you will want to test what extra power you do get.

So if you want a little more power and torque with worse fuel consumption go for a piggy back. After 2010 at least for BMW, you can't upload performance maps into the ECU via the OBD port so a piggy back is your only option unfortunately. But nowhere near as good as a remap!

Recently a German tuning magazine called Euro Tuner did a comparison test for various brands of ECU tuning boxes. This test was done in cooperation with Swiss company called Insoric, specialised in precision measuring.

They took a stock BMW 318D which on the dyno made 137.7 HP and 285.6 NM of torque. Stock acceleration 0-100 km/h 9.44 sec and overtaking 80-120 km/h in 4th gear 7.44 sec.

Race Chip Pro Ultimate came out as the winner, both in terms of performance as well as pricing. Measured HP on the wheels: 161.02 / Torque : 331.5 NM

0-100 km/h acceleration 8.48 sec. 80-120 km/h 5.92 sec.

These are substantial performance improvements for a relative reasonable price (Euro 429,00)

Not every ECU box is the same and also Race Chip did not achieve their advertised 25% HP and torque increase., the 17% increase is still substantial and definitely make a difference.. The higher fuel consumption is solely related to the heavier foot, if it's there you wanna feel it.
