webfact
Traffic police to adopt 6 strategies in dealing with traffic during school daysBANGKOK, 13 May 2013 (NNT)-Traffic police at 88 stations across Bangkok have been told to get ready to handle massive traffic jams during the first week of new school term expected to begin this week.Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Pol. Maj. Gen. Worasak Nopsittiporn and Deputy Metropolitan Police Chief Pol Maj Gen Uthaiwan Kaew Sa-ard have instructed traffic police to follow the 6 following guidelines in order to keep traffic congestion under control. The guidelines consist of drafting a management plan with school administrators prior to the first school day, coordinating with local police for additional assistance, taking a psychological approach to maintaining traffic flow e.g. assigning female police officers to handle traffic, making sure traffic lights are handled effectively, removing obstacles from streets, and providing information to the public on how traffic police operate.Additionally, more police will also be deployed at school areas which are normally heavily congested during school terms in order to accommodate parents and students.-- NNT 2013-05-
laurentbkk
"removing obstacles from streets, and providing information to the public on how traffic police operate." Does that include the cars which park on rama 4 all the time and many other streets ? well at least they do something ... let see how things will be handled ... After all we never know . plasticpaddy
The best strategy would be to ban the BIB from the traffic control light "kiosks".

Popular Post chainarong
The best option is for them to ensure they are not on camera when taking bribes, so they don't end up like police officer 6636, the introduction of the female police officers is to add more confusion to a confused department, which is in a continual state of confusion. Meanwhile , DSI is working to catch the real criminals in Thailand, just ask a Democrat politician

Also on Silom where it is a 3 lane road but cars and stall carts are filling up one of the 3. Don't allow parking or stalls to be set up until AFTER the schools and rush hour have finished.

seminomadic
I'd like to ask other TV'ers: Between this article and yesterday's piece on the 7k-more-cops-and-volunteers....... in your years of following BKK news have you ever been able to recall a wind-up to the school year that involved this much mental/municipal/ostensible bracing for traffic congestion as this year or is this business as usual? rubl
So, how many days left till schools open? How many days left to follow the guidelines in 'drafting plans', 'co-ordinating', 'taking an approach', 'assigning female pol. off.', make sure lights work efficiently', 'remove obstacles', 'inform public'? Oh, schools start this week? Well, we'll be ready for after the next break then :-)
Bellweather
" Adopt strategies ", yet another phrase to add to the approved list of buzz words to be used in official announcement and press releases, of course it doesn't have to mean anything just as long as it sounds impressive.

Rorri
These "strategies" will have the same affect as those put in place for songkran... These people never cease to amaze me with how many "strategies" they can come up with, but never actually put any in place. I strongly suspect none of them have the brains to think never mind implement. Trying so hard to show intelligence, to be seen as good as or better than farang, but fail miserably. Even simple traffic solutions, like correctly implementing traffic lights, to change their timing for peak and off peak hours, isn't done, hence the huge tailbacks.

Oh, schools start this week? Well, we'll be ready for after the next break then :-) 'the first week of new school term expected to begin this week.' If it were me doing this my first strategy would have been to find out exactly when the school term started and to have done this some time ago.
rbrooks
They forgot one more strategy, avoid taking bribes under overpasses where cameras could be recording their favorite hobby, corruption.
Halion
Drafting a 6 point management plan. only days before schools begin. So typicaly Thai. They have no concept of such procedures otherwise this would have been started months ago in order that they could implement the plan at the start of the school season. Nothing will change. There will be no improvement apart from this rhetoric and the normality of these big wigs spouting their verbal and meaningless disingenious nonesence. personchester
In order to prevent those tremendous traffic congestion's due to children's schooling new arrangements should be made ... Local schools should receive their own buses in order to collect the children / students. The assemble point will be identified in order to bring the children to school (AM) and also return them to this point (PM) The Children can walk, or the parents make the short drive to the nearby assemble point at the given times This system will reduce traffic, and will reduce accidents, in particular motorbike accidents. How about ditching the first-car-scheme-cars and the high percentages of illegal unlicensed drivers they produced???? How about building better quality schools that are not only based in Bangkok "ONLY BANGKOK", so students from their home provinces don't have to travel all the way for high expenses and high cost of living EXTRA to Bangkok to receive a higher (on paper) status education. And that's the point, every Thai national is practically forced to travel and live in overcrowded Bangkok, because their standards of living and infrastructure hasn't been improved for centuries. So the governments strategies have always been to force people into Bangkok "ONLY BANGKOK", and there you have it the traffic problem

thequietman
I am sure you have all seen this................................ traffic lights working fine, so policeman is blowing his whistle and beckening traffic to the timing of the lights. What is he doing? If he wasn't blowing his whistle, would we not know to move when the light turns green, if he wasn't there ? Totally pointless exercise. As are the police here.

Haha the CIB ( clowns in brown) but no, if he doesn't blow his whistle the majority of Thai people don't know it's time to move when green. Seen it every day, they don't go on green and don't stop on red. Also get fed up when behind some one at snail speed when the coutdown timer at the green traffic light starts running. One would expect they at least speed up to the legal speed limit if it means that would get them through the green light, but not them because they have no intention of stopping at the red light anyway.
