Chalerm wants larger role in southern peace talks

BANGKOK, May 14 – Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung today deplored what he termed as ignorance regarding his role in Thailand’s ongoing peace talks with southern militant groups.

A high-level Thai delegation, led by National Security Council (NSC) chief Paradorn Pattanatabut, has twice met for peace dialogues with core leaders of the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.

But Mr Chalerm has never been invited to or formally informed of the peace talks.

He said he has told the NSC and the Thai delegation that it was good to hold peace talks with the BRN but that he should be consulted and allowed to share his opinions in his capacity as a cabinet member in charge of the southern problem.

“There has not been any progress in the first few rounds of peace talks. The NSC should tell the Malaysian government to stop allowing the presence of insurgency groups in its country. The insurgents should be pushed out of Malaysia,” Mr Chalerm said bluntly.

He said the southern militants’ demand for a revocation of the emergency decree, which has been in force in the southern border provinces, could not be announced unless peace reigns in Thailand’s far South.

“State agencies concerned, including the army, do not object to abolishing enforcement of the emergency decree but we want to see peace first,” he said.

This was one of the three proposals made by the Thai security team in its talks with the BRN members in Kuala Lumpur, he said.

Mr Chalerm said he will travel to the South soon to meet with investigative authorities in four southern provinces following allegations by southerners that they had been mistreated by state officials.

Meanwhile, the NSC chief said security officials and teachers’ federations in the three southern provinces have cooperated in providing special safety measures to teachers as the new school term starts.

Special task forces will be deployed at schools and along routes leading to schools to provide protection to teachers, he said.

He added that he has received a 10-point analysis of the peace talks between the Thai security team and the BRN, and would raise it for consultations with officials concerned. (MCOT online news)

I thought he was in charge of the Southern issues at one stage. How much larger role can you get than that?

"deplored what he termed as ignorance regarding his role in Thailands ongoing peace talks"

Since the peace talks are going silent he should be happy instead :-)

So that's the kiss of death to the peace talks then.

Why

Wasn't he the guy who was in charge at one point .. .but he refused to travel to the south of Thailand?

Well maybe he needs to realise that they are not going to invite him because he gets pissed and embarrases both nations when they do ask him along.

I thought Chalerm was going to fix the problems in the south within 90 days?

Someone pass me the ear medication please.... a large one

Why

Wasn't he the guy who was in charge at one point .. .but he refused to travel to the south of Thailand? It's the second government he's served in and had responsibility for the south and both times studiously avoided going to the region until ordered to do so. The first time it cost him his job.

Looks like he feels he's not getting enough publicity these days. Can you blame the others involved for not inviting him ?

This guy was going to go through this southern problem like a dose of epsom salts, however a wise path was taken by the others involved , so as to prevent a complete war breaking out , they never told him anything ,so damage was minimal, some would say a failure, better to be a failure than looking an idiot.bah.gif

The man has completely lost the plot, has had a major tantrum and has thrown the toys out of the pram.

Time to go.

Chalerm Wants Larger Role

Please, somebody give the guy a large bog roll.

A loose cannon that is not needed during these delicate talks. Best he just shut up.

That this individual was assigned by the PM (real or proxy) to handle the situation in the South plainly shows how little they care about the lives of the people in those provinces.

Didn't the PM recently take over from him?

He got away with going down there once so now thinks he's bullet proof.. as long as Rambo goes along.

He said he has told the NSC and the Thai delegation that it was good to hold peace talks with the BRN but that he should be consulted and allowed to share his opinions in his capacity as a cabinet member in charge of the southern problem.

But Mr Chalerm has never been invited to or formally informed of the peace talks.

"Listen to me! I AM IN CHARGE, as long as i don't have to go there, and if i do have to go i'm taking my son for security, he's an excellent pistol shot.

Chalerm wants larger role in southern peace talks...

Translation: he wants his name & picture in the news more often.

SCARY DEVELOPMENTS.

Some people just do not seem to understand when others ignore them and do not want any association with them. With his reptuation the man is probably somewhat lacking on social invites also.

This guy is so stupid, he actually wants to stick his oar into a process which has zero chance of success, and no monetary benefit.

Sometimes ,face, is the ultimate downfall.

The clock is running down for the PT government's chief whipster. Yaowapa is already being primed to take over the role.

Just don't let him build any police sations down there, this time he might vanish like the money.

I think his role expired when he showed up for peace talks, drunk, in a Muslim country.

What a slap in the face that must have been, talk about disrespectful.

Fair play to the Malaysians.

Why

Wasn't he the guy who was in charge at one point .. .but he refused to travel to the south of Thailand?

I thought Yingluck had a moment of clarity and relieved him of the post.

Then she went back to lala land and said she would take charge of it. The funny part of it is I believe she could do it if she went about it differently than the last two years.

Am I wrong and she left him in charge.

There is no bigger tool in the entire country than Chalerm.

Well first off I think you should have used an f instead of a t in tool.

That would explain his competitiveness. With out Jatuporn on the national scene now the spot is wide open for biggest fool in Thailand and he is fighting hard to get it.

One could easily think he had some thing on Thaksin.

Wish he'd make up his mind. He was told to go down there but procrastinated (Chinese New Year/loan talks/songkran). He was told he was in charge and didn't want to be. Now, when the PM indicates she'll be taking the reins herself, he wants the responsibility.

Maybe he considers himself the expert since his trip about a month ago when he sneaked down there in the middle of the night and then left the next morning.
