It's not a ghost, it is a lower angel, not normal to give red Fanta but it dose happen if you look closely at the photo you can see some small dancing dolls, the gifts are because people come and pray and ask for something, maybe find a husband, or get a government job, or travel to another country, the is seven coloured cloths is a gift also.

Apparently they feed off the flavor, aroma and color, not the substance itself.

Red is the color of blood, so it helps give them life-strength, vitality.

But some spirits do prefer other more specific drinks, just like different types of dolls/toys etc.

Talk to the people that take care of a particular spirit house and they'll tell you the details, if they can see you're sincerely respectful and curious, not just trying to make fun of them.

The picture shows a shrine dedicated to a guardian spirit.

The colour red is traditionally a positive sign, a symbol for joy and happiness. Offering someone something to drink is also a symbol of kindness.

People offer red drinks because they mean well towards this spirit.

Not even close! whistling.gif

It is offerings to the unborn child. If you are interested in the real story, goggle "kuman thong"thumbsup.gif

What picture are you talking about?

Are you trying to say that every spirit house has something to do with that particular idol?

The topic here is just the normal bog-standard spirit houses you see all over Thailand. The Kuman Thong phenomenon is much rarer and limited to particular subgroups.

I've thought red is traditionally the color for wealth and prosperity ( think about the color scheme of the gold shops...).

So in the Thai (Chinese) mindset this means: Offer red lemonade, get shitloads of GOLD!!!

Odd eh ?? as in nature Red is a sign of danger.

I think we all know the answer anyway, have you ever seen an empty bottle at the shrines?? nah nor me , unless it evaporated.

I asked this question of the missus a few months back and her answer is as follows. Because they believe that kids like red soda more than other flavors, and these are for the kid ghosts.

Not saying this is correct, just the answer i got.
