Poor guy. Got into a fight and couldn't win it so he had to shoot. Let him go.

Yep, typical Thai, if they don't gang up on you like a pack of dogs, they bring a knife

Poor Lybian bloke ... living in Lybia dangerous as heck

comes to Thailand to nail a few Thai bar girls and gets shot

RIP

Great speech man. Keep on spreading the idea that every guy who comes to Thailand is a whore hunter. Bravo.

A Muslim in a bar.. a girly bar.. Nah can't be true. Unless of course he's like the millions of other hypocritical Muslims around the World. Maybe the Thai shooter had seen the news from the UK about the two folk from the religion of peace who hacked a young father to death and he was practicing good self-defence. Give him a few hundred thousand baht together with a big thank you and let him jog on.

Not all Lybians are muslim!

A tragic accident. The Arab was almost certainly lost and had stopped to ask directions. Everybody knows that Arabs do not frequent bars that serve alcohol and have scantily clad tarts everywhere.

Are you trying to take the pi$$? You ever been to the ME?

Yes you might have a 'jaidam' but that's where it ends.

Oh dear. Irony obviously not your strong point is it!

My Thai girlfriend bought me a small and easily hidden razor cutter, the kind kids have in their stationary bags to cut paper. No explanation but she DID think I should always carry it. I don't but I might start. Perhaps the Libyan didn't realize that Thailand is such a dangerous place and he should have been armed himself.

2 weeks ago I was in a new coffee shop in the new gas station and chatting with an old guy. His family was with him. He asked if I speak Thai and I said that I speak a little. Then, out of the blue, he said, "you know people around here don't like foreigners." His daughter/granddaughter understood and turned bright red. My response was quite Asian, I nodded and said, "I see," and then excused myself and left.

I run into it allot also. I do not drink, and have never been in a bar here in Thailand. And have lived here for a few years. I love photography and travel extensively all over Thailand. It is amazing how many Thais really dislike foreigners. Many times when shooting with other Thais I am confronted or treated with disrespect. I personally am tired of it. I look at it as a no win for me. Better to leave than fight IMO.

I shoot too, and have been confronted only twice ... by a hung-over farang tourist (who was near my shot, but not the subject) and by a shari-obsessive Muslim (whom I was shooting from behind), both in public on sidewalks. I upgraded to a 20x (optical) zoom model and am thinking about upgrading to the new 50x (optical) zoom. These high-zoom, bridge cameras are inexpensive and, basically, telescopes with the option to capture digital images. High-zoom enhances discretion ... the better part of valor.

The thing is, travel guides REALLY need to stress not to get into fights with locals in tourist areas of Thailand at any cost. A lot of young testosterone charged men come to Thailand and see these short skinny guys and don't think about it. But that is a massive mistake.

You are right.

Isn't that part of the "excitement" for a certain sort of "tourist", They dont show much common sense in their home countries, and it is certainly not injected during the inbound flight.

Is there any rational reason for a sane man to enter into an argument with locals in a bar in any foreign country in the world ?

There is good reason for that. History teaches that two of the most undesirable things have come in the wake of farang: Imperialism and Ethnocentrism. Any guess why Thailand did not succumb?

Because they're familiar with them having practiced these themselves either in the past (imperialism) or currently (ethnocentrism)?

... And again it is common sense that the locals resent the foreign males here. And a club where they are drinking and there are Thai ladies is a bad combination. Let them have it. There are plenty other bars and clubs.

Where the heck do people get this supposed common sense??? I've been to countless Thai-oriented bars--sometimes the only farang present--and I've had nothing but positive experiences. Man, you must be petrified stepping into a Tawandang. I went to one with a Singaporean friend, and I had several women sending over 'welcome' notes (and, no, I look nothing like Brad Pitt). The one I ended up hanging out with was a 'regular girl' with a day job and uni education. I've been to other bars where I've ended up drinking with some decent Thai guys (and no, I was not the 'wallet' for the evening). I've never had a hint of a problem. I have observed, however, farangs acting as if they are 'gods' (yes, I'm a farang), 'aggressively' hitting on women, dominating the dancing area (if there is one), and I can see this testing the patience of the locals. Happens even in Singapore where I live. Just last night, I was at a popular bar here, and there was a group of drunken white guys (albeit well-dressed) who hit on just about every attractive girl in the place, including girls who were there with local guys! Acting as if this was there playground and they could do whatever they want (jumping on stage, trying to high-five with complete strangers, etc.) ... but they actually looked like 'normal guys' (not yobs). Got on my nerves just watching it. I can only imagine how a local would feel watching their antics ... in Singapore or in Thailand.

Bit of a pointless exercise really in Singapore,as those Straits Chinese girls are all as cold as a wet fish!rolleyes.gif

But when they leave their home lands, some seem to have a special dispensation from their religeous beliefs. Witness the Gambling clubs and Bars in many European capital cities frequented by the "great and good" of Saudi Arabia. Iran, UAE, etc.

A few months ago I was introduced to a Thai bloke and we and his family became friends. The odd beer on a Sunday etc etc. He was an articulate, smart, very calm, nice bloke. Then one afternoon after more than a few Leo's he produced from his baggyish jeans and backpack (he rides a bike, 3 were in the backpack) 4 pistols and regaled us at the table with them. All were licensed.

To say I was shocked was a bit of an understatement, and when asked why, he claimed he needed them for "protection". He didn't say from who he needed protection. Never underestimate the fact that many Thai's are carrying guns on them or in their vehicles.

Nevertheless if one keep smiling an behave politely one is in no danger at all in this country.

The only Thai men in Spicy are either ladyboys or mafia/police which in some cases is the same. There are no 'normal' Thai men in Spicy - EVER. It would als make a lot more sense that a mafia/police would have a gun.

While these rude, ill-mannered louts originate from many different countries, a solid majority of them tend to be from countries with cultures in which women are viewed as little more than animate property - i.e., Middle Eastern countries, Latin American countries, and African countries

FYI I've spend few years living in South America (Argentina and other countries) and I never seen that women are viewed in this way there... As most of them comes from Spanish and Italian background they respect and adore their females (mothers. wife's, GF). usually. I don't think that any of Thai man would stand the temper which can bring to home Chica Latina :P ... The thing about Macho for South/Central America is to impress and posses as many women as possible as conquer and that doesn't mean they don't respect them...

I think we're all missing the point here. Going to places full of alpha males who have a high probability of being intoxicated is a high risk scenario. Ego's are high and reasoning is low.

Why would an "alpha male" be looking to pay for sex with a prostitute in a low grade bar in a third world country?

Spicy is not a "low grade" bar. Thailand is not a "third world" country. If you really want to know though, I'm sure you can find plenty of alpha males looking to pay for sex with a prostitute whom you could ask. smile.png

Some countries I have been to (Belize, Philippines) have metal detectors outside some night clubs. In Thailand no one wants this because it is well known that the high rollers won't come without goons and guns.

Yesterday's Thai Daily News (28/05/13) is reporting that the gunman, 30 year-old Ektana Saengdawkmai, is a sergeant in the Thai army and the deceased was a Libyan businessman in the clothes industry.

The soldier said he'd gone out for a drink to the pub with a friend and the Libyan was sitting with friends at an adjacent table. The incident was sparked by them [accidently?] bumping into each other in the pub, which lead to a fist fight, followed by the shooting.

Police have charged the soldier with murder and carrying and discharging a weapon in a public place without proper reason.

Tharath described the soldier as being drunk and smelling strongly of alcohol when arrested.

In other news the 'sergeant' was probably part of some police/army drug running thing and felt like a right big man. The arab probably wasn't all that dangerous but arabs do have an unfortunate habit of flailing their arms around and shouting over the most minor occurences. Clash of cultures as they say fueled by massive alcohol intake by two cultures who don't usually tolerate drinking all that well.

Does that sound far off or not?

''great death'' you say.. must be a Freudian slip.. Not pleased the guy was murdered, just don't really care. If someone frequents places like that and gets into fights with Thais then what do I care. But what does amuse me is people like you taking offence to my post which was a bit of banter to begin with. I've lived here for 12 years and never even had an argument with a Thai.. Nor a Farang either come to that. Why.. Because I understand that I'm a foreigner in a foreign country and would not disrespect the country I'm living in nor the people, so when I see something like this, I think to myself, he probably was a wrong 'un if he's getting into fights with locals in a local bar.

Where did I use the words "great death". However, you & I definitely have a different intrepretion of the meaning of "banter"

ain't that the truth, I was looking again for the ''great death'' thing which i assumed was a typo for ''great depth'' or something. To be honest, it's all <deleted> anyway. But I'm really curious to know something. You're all over me because in your opinion I'm compartmentalizing Muslims and I'm an ignorant fascist or whatever but I don't see you replying to posts to people who reckon Thai males as needing guns because they have small penises or the post the rear ''Yep, typical Thai, if they don't gang up on you like a pack of dogs, they bring a knife to a fist fight and a gun to a knife fight,'' or ''gang up on you like a pack of dogs...

they bring a knife...

fist fight...

knife fight...

Typical Thai.''

Double standards or what mate

One thing I dont understand : Why would anyone be in any bar , any club , where there are Thai males. Its common knowledge that they resent foreign males here. And especially in a club where they are drinking and there are Thai ladies.

Spicey is predominantly an after hours pick-up bar/disco for foreigners. I think your "common knowledge" is faulty.

I think your reading comprehension is faulty.: It may well be a pick up place for foreigners .But there was at least one Thai male in there. And my point is, that is one too many.

Some foreigners are looking to pick up Thai males (of various descriptions).

Sure, fine , to each their own. If someone is looking for gay boys, then gay boy bars are the place to go. My advice to foreign males lookiig for Thai ladies is to avoid crossover bars and discos where there are local males. This is not the first time a foreign male, foreign males, have had serious confrontations with Thai males in bars and clubs. And again it is common sense that the locals resent the foreign males here. And a club where they are drinking and there are Thai ladies is a bad combination. Let them have it. There are plenty other bars and clubs.

If you sincerely believe this crap then <deleted> are you doing here? Why don't you just gtfo, or are you another whore hunter? Then it's probably right the locals hate you :)

Yup don't get into fights with Thais, you can't win.

They will either gang up or pulling knifes/guns or whatever they can find.

Better loose face and walk away and live another day.

Only in Thailand of course. Here in America they tend to keep quiet and go about their merry way because they do not quite have the great numbers to back up their courage and would probably lose in a gun battle on our turf.
