Dunno read somewhere that whitehouse chef has always been from the philippines as of late - standing tradition now. Not sure why - perhaps one of our educated yanks here might be able to explain this?

They work cheap! :o

As a consequence of France opposing the whole Iraq thing, French fries were renamed Freedom Fries at the White House, still served by a French chef though. :o

Truly a matter of national security. :D

Penz - the whitehouse chef is from the Phillipines. :D

Your right, I was wrong, but still...

While Mr. Scheib was gracious in his parting words, saying that it had been an honor to serve the first lady, sources close to the chef say that his relationship with the first family had grown increasingly tense since he was asked to stop using French recipes and cooking techniques after France refused to support the US-led invasion of Iraq.

If this is true, then the Bush family is even more stupid than I could ever thought (yeah like that's possible)

I saw a French documentary once about that French cook at the WH. They cited "security" concerns at one poing because they were scared that the cook would work for the French special services during the height of UN conflict. He said that things were tense, and he worked part-time with another cook. He was making like 10k a month.

Btw, the tailor is also French. The poor dude has been in DC so long, like 30 years, he now speaks French with an American accent :D that will teach him the poor bastard

Well, this is common cocaine paranoia, nothing unusual for Bush nor other US 'High-Flyers'... :o

Thanks, Tax, for that definitive lesson on french fries. One other noteworthy comment would be that in America the thicker sliced potatoes are called potato wedges.

After reading this thread I think we can all be assured jobs at McDonalds. :o

well...like a lot of american teenagers in the 60s I worked at a MacDonalds...I was de grill man as I looked very mexican(my mom was from Bolivia) and could not be trusted to handle money...

there was a potato peeling machine...consisted of a vibrating cylinder with an abrasive liner...shook them spuds an' dey came out nice an' shiny. Obviously the result of your basic yankee ingenuity...how else were peeled spuds gonna be less labor intensive?

This was at a time in Orange County CA, USA when there still were orange groves and agricultural labor. The fries man was a strapping lad from a local grove that spent his entire 8 to 12 pm shft preparing fries from bags of whole potatoes...peel, wash, slice(with a slicer that had a handle and required strength) then wash again and parfry and put in racks of baskets. He was a hayseed and useta crack corny jokes. Never seen nobody work so hard for so little...

for the rest of us, it was a mark of honour to carry a 100lb bag of potatoes up the stairs from the storage area down below(the fry man could carry two). I was 16 and skinny, non-athletic and smoked 2 packs of Camels per day. I failed and faced the sneering opprobrium of my 'workmates'.

a story of personal failure with regard to the local preparation of 'french fries'...

and in New Zealand they are called......Chups

:D:D:o

and you aussies say "cheeps" :D

Now, where is the Velcro? :D

Chups/cheep (note no 's') beware! :o

Another amazingly funny quote from zzap.

Thanks for taking all the time it takes you to think this stuff up. What a funny guy. :o

Actually, in the long run, those things generate income.

Why do you think that GWB wants to amp up the space program? :D

I wonder how long one of us Yanks would stay a member of this forum if they took serious pot shots at the Brits? :D

You'll find that as a 'septic tank', once you leave the safe confines of the good 'ol USA, we ain't appreciated any more by anyone except the THAIS! :o

Bieng someone who hasn't gotten to travel I always dreamed of traveling Europe. I wanted to see everything and enjoy who these people are and what they have given the world. I even thought I might try to track down the family my great-grandfather left behind.

I think that's a bad idea now. :o
