South continues to be hit by floods

BANGKOK, 18 June 2013 (NNT) - Torrential rain continues to flood most parts of the southern region as the weather bureau has predicted more rain during the next few days.

In Surat Thani, authorities rushed to flooded areas, mostly in Phrasaeng district, by boat to help stranded people after floods rendered roads impassable to vehicles. Over 30 households in Ban Ton Sai Village were among the victims of the deluge.

Phang Nga meanwhile was hit by a second wave of forest runoff on Sunday. Residents had to move their belongings to higher ground as their oil palm plantations and fruit orchards remained submerged under water.

According to the Meteorological Department, a strong monsoon has generated up to 3-meter-high waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. All shipping should proceed with caution as storms are expected in the region until June 20.

Koh Chang's Khlong Phlu Waterfall closed to visitors

TRAT, 18 June 2013 (NNT) - Continuous heavy rains have forced Trat provincial authorities to temporarily close Khlong Phlu Waterfall in fear of possible forest runoffs.

The local national park unit said the waters of Khlong Phlu Waterfall in Koh Chang could reach critical levels due to days of torrential rain. Visitors are being barred from entering the site as flood warnings have been issued.

Koh Chang saw nearly 170 millimeters of rain during the past two days, raising fears of large-scale forest runoff on the island. National park officials are closely monitoring the situation around the clock.

The Meteorological Department earlier reported that a strong southwestern monsoon, which was prevailing over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, was set to bring more rain to the East and the South. Residents of Trat, Ranong and Phang Nga are, therefore, advised to follow weather updates for more information.

Group demands that a new premier be royally appointed
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Thai Patriotic Front has filed a petition seeking the Royal appointment of a new prime minister, citing what it described as failures by the current government on such issues as amnesty legislation, the rice-pledging policy and the Bt2-trillion infrastructure loans.

Chaiwat Sinsuwong, leader of the anti-government Thai Patriotic Front, and about 1,000 demonstrators gathered in front of the Grand Palace to submit a petition to the Royal Household Bureau seeking the Royal appointment of a new prime minister.

While five representatives of the group submitted the petition, the protesters waited outside and shouted, "Yingluck get out! The Shinawatras get out!" Their chants drew the attention of tourists.

Chaiwat said the fact that 8,999,999 people had signed the petition signalled the failure of the government, as well as the signatories' concern that the government intended to get rid of constitutional monarchy as the country's system of government.

Chaiwat also claimed that fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra is pulling the strings behind the current administration and legislative branch, leading to what he described as a parliamentary dictatorship.

After the event, Chaiwat insisted on continuing the rally at Sanam Luang.

Almost 10,000 bottles of cough syrup seized in the South

SONGKHLA, 18 June 2013 (NNT) -- Songkhla authorities arrested 3 suspects for possessing modern medicine without licenses including almost 10,000 bottles of cough syrup with street values of at least 1 million baht.

The seizure was made by officials and police at a local checkpoint in Chana District, where the truck of the first suspect was intercepted.

The authorities found on the truck 63 boxes of the cough syrup bottles, along with 274 pills of tranquilizer, 6 mobile phones, and an inventory book. Two other accomplices drove a car in the front as an advance team and managed to steer away at first but were arrested after a short pursuit.

The three suspects claimed they were innocent, being hired by a lady making a phone call from Pattani to pick up the boxes in Phatthalung, without knowing the content of the boxes.

Police found in the search of their vehicles a name card of a phamarcist who would soon be summoned for questioning.

DPM does not believe violence will be reduced during Ramadan

BANGKOK, 18 June 2013 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung does not believe that the insurgent group in the Deep South will tone down violence during the Ramadan period as promised.

According to the deputy prime minister, he has yet to receive any report from Lt Gen Paradorn Pattanatabut, the National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General, on the third round of talks between the Thai government and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), which took place on June 13th.

DPM Chalerm also said he did not believe violence in the deep South will be toned down during the Ramadal festival given there were still groups of people who would be looking to attack soldiers and southern residents during the period. However, he remained undaunted and would continue to solve the problem in the southern border provinces for the safety of the people and the nation as a whole.

Mr. Chalerm has also told Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt to renovate roads in the Deep South, so that the insurgents will not able to plant bombs underground.

The deputy prime minister has also brushed aside the claim by the BRN insurgent group that violence in the area has been caused by soldiers, adding that Thai soldiers have been trained to protect lives, not to take them.
