PATTANI: -- A suspected insurgent now in custody, Sakariya Tohtayong, has implicated alleged masterminds of the movement behind unrest in the deep South, a senior official said yesterday.

Sakariya gave useful testimony that may allow the authorities to solve many security cases.

They include bombings at the CS Pattani Hotel and the Diana shopping complex, the robbery of a security van carrying cash for a bank, and an attack on a grocery shop in which six people, including a baby, were killed.

Over Bt5.8 million was stolen from the security van.

"His answers during the interrogation have allowed us to know who are the masterminds and who are members of the movement," Colonel Komkrit Rattanachaya said, in his capacity as head of the 47th Paramilitary Regimental Taskforce.

Sakariya was arrested in Muang district in Pattani early on Saturday in an operation that saw security officials shoot Ameen Dareng dead during a 15-minute gunfight. Both Sakariya and Ameen, 31, were wanted for alleged roles in many incidents.

Komkrit said Sakariya told interrogators Ameen had ordered attacks on the grocery shop and the robbery of the security van. "We are in the process of solving major cases in the deep South," he said.

Counter-Insurgency 101 : Handling an informer

Do NOT put his picture in the press with details of all the information he has given you. This is counter-productive as it discourages other informers, gives advance warning to the enemy, and enables them to carry out retribution.

Harebrained or pretty common and effective tactic?

We have no clue what info the guy gave up. Just because it's in the newspapers, doesn't make it true, especially when dealing with covert stuff.

Maybe he's staying quiet and they want to scare him by publishing false accounts of him ratting out his masters.

This is Thailand.

The canary sang and the police want to garner as much credit as possible. Thinking about the effect such publicity might have on the suspect, his family or the bad guys was never even a blip on their radar.

Stupid is, as stupid does.

Who cares? They will get taken from the list with people with an arrest warrant. Double standards are the rule in the South. Children are locked up for using drugs, terrorists are left alone all in the name of looking for peace. One cannot negotiate with muslim extremists, even Assad and Putin knows, the West and Yingluck not yet.
