I was told at the Bangna office that I didn't need one from back home , all I needed to do was take a 4 hour class , take a test (in English) a road test , and I could get one. This is a lot different than the things I have heard here before where people say you need one from back home in order to get a Thai one. My wife says we can probably skip all that and just buy one from them but when she asked they did say no to that ! lol

If you had a licence or better still an IDP from back home you may have been able to avoid taking all the parts of the test - but it seems to be very dependant on the particular test centre and person you speak to - as well as what side of the bed they got out of that morning ;-).

Not having a home licence just means you are, theoretically, starting from scratch like all the Thais.

Basically all said.

My choice:

I had an IDP, my passport, got me a "health certificate" (a joke) and walked into the DLT office.

Less than 2 hours laters I walked out with my Thai DP without any test.

I have no clue why they didn't even take the reaction and eyesight test as usual in this case.

To me this looks much easier than starting from scratch, doing multiple choice theory test in very ambigous english and so on.

On the other hand: yes I know some people who did it from scratch.

I did it from scratch in Loei.

My US driver's license had expired in 1988 and my Saudi driver's license was in Arabic. No joy there.

I took with me a doctor's certificate. Cost me 30 baht from the village witch doctor, but it worked.

The DL people gave me a booklet to read and become familiar with the questions, road signs, etc. I read this while sitting through the obligatory movie of about 30 minutes.

Took the eye test for color blindness and the reaction test with no problem.

Passed the multiple choice question test. Must get 23 of 30 to pass.

Went outside where they asked me to drive around a track laid out on the grounds without having an accident.

Accomplished all this, went inside, paid my money and got my license. A little over 4 hours, start to finish.

Thankx everyone ..... I don't know how the rumor you were required to have one from your home country started but wish I had known the truth sooner. 4 hours more or less is what they told me to, I probably assumed the 4 hours to be a class not the whole process thankx again.

Yes that all sounds about right but remember tit,not all paces go by the same rules.A lot of people from BKK are now getting their dl over here(Cha-am) because it is a lot easier to pass here they say.

Even over here they actually have to parallel park and do a few other things.

One man from BKK got really angry and started shouting because he could not buy his license. He left without and is probably trying his luck elsewhere.

Do they provide a vehicle for the driving test or must you bring your own?
